Charlie and Olive will walk to school because districts in our area are very small. But by the time kids are in middle school and high school, many take the bus or subway.
I walked to elementary, took the school bus to jr high, and my parents drove me/I drove in high school.

My parents drove us. We went to private school so taking the bus wasn't an option, and it was too far to walk.

@LuLu Mom: your sister was driving at 14?!?!?! where were you guys living at the time? i had no idea that was legal anywhere!
my parents had a carpool group so we were driven (private school, no bus), then in 7th grade i started public school & took a school bus, senior year i drove myself because i was taking my classes at a community college instead of the HS & there was no bus.

I took the school bus until high school. Since I lived within the 2 mile radius, I had to walk. My parents drove me most of the time until I was able to drive.

Took the bus to elementary, and walked to middle and high school! They were all in the same complex, but graduating from taking busing to walking was a symbol of growing up in our family.

Mom drove us. You had to pay to take the bus in CA. In my state, the bus is already paid for by your taxes, so my kids will probably take the bus a lot!

@mrs. bird: Nebraska, they have a permit called a "school permit" and when you turn 14 and if you live more than a mile away from school (farm kids) you can drive to and from school. Strong stipulations, you are only allowed to drive your siblings and yourself, and you have to take the shortest route to and from school, no stops except for a gas station (across from school.)
We are from a small farming community, so permits like this are very common in the Midwest. I started driving at 14 too, after my sister graduated HS, I took over the driving duties.

I took the bus until 10th grade, when a friend's dad started driving us...it was so not "cool" to ride the bus after that. We were able to start driving once we had our licenses in 11th grade.

I took the bus. Even after I got my license, I didn't have a car, so I still took the bus until one of my friends took pity on me being a senior on the bus and she started driving me to/from school every day.

Horrible horrible bus. In fact, we are rental shopping (again! Just like last year!) and my n. 1 requirement is to walk her to school. (Aside from safety of course.)

Carpooled with neighbors in elementary, mom drove us in middle and high school until my brother started driving. We totally could've taken the bus in middle and high school, but my mom told us later that she felt guilty about sending us on the bus since she was a SAHM.

School bus through 9th grade. I don't remember why, but high school-ers didn't really take the bus, so I sort of guilt tripped my mom into driving me from grades 10-12.

I always took the bus, and I don't ever want my child to take the bus. Our bus got in an accident and rolled over, and there were some terrible behaviors that went on on that bus in high school. I hate that the kids don't wear seatbelts.

I was homeschooled until I was a teen, so I just walked downstairs.
When I started public school, my mom drove me.
Then I drove myself once I got my license at 16.

@LuLu Mom: dude, you just blew my mind! here you can take a permit test at 16, then you need 30hrs of classroom training, 12hrs of instruction time in the car, 6 observed hours driving the car, your parents need to take a 2hr class and give you another 40hrs behind the wheel, then you take a road test after you've done all that & are over 16.5 to get a jr operator license & can only drive 5am-midnight, no cell phones, no one under the age of 18 in the car (beside siblings) for the first 6 months. once you're 18 you can get a real license. a lot different! did you guys take driver's ed when you were like 13 or do they just assume your parents taught you already?

We moved around a lot so I went to a lot of different schools. Most of them I walked to and others required we get a private bus.

We had a school bus that picked us up, but in the summer I biked most days. The school was 2km away (about 10 minutes by bike).
I took public transit to high school (which starts in grade 7 in Quebec).
We'll probably end up driving LO to school. If the school is close enough, she may be able to bike when she gets older.

I walked from my 1st day of kindergarten to my last day of high school 
All three of my schools were next to each other, and my house was a 15-minute walk away. There was one year in high school where I took a zero-hour class that started at 6:30--my mom drove me on those days. And sometimes in high school I would catch a ride with a friend in the neighborhood or take the city bus. The school bus didn't come to my neighborhood since I lived so close.
ETA: I almost never walked to or from school alone--when I was in K-1 I walked with my mom, then I was deemed old enough to do it alone--but I still walked with friends from the neighborhood.

Daycare drove us for part of elementary then my brother and I walked the other half of elementary. Walked to jr high and high school until I got my license then drove.

@mrs. bird: For the school permit we had to take a normal driving and written test at the DMV (like you would for a driver's license) but I took driver's ed very early like the summer I was 14 (before I started driving to school.) In our state in order to get your "real" license (POP permit at 16) we had to have driver's ed or our parents had to drive like 200 hours with us or something like that. But because I did it all at 14 I just went in and got my license after my eye test since I passed driver's ed and that passed as me passing for the state.
At 16 the POP permit has a curfew of midnight, I'm not sure if anything else has been added in the last 15 years but that was the only "stipulation" that I remember. We could have people in the car with us!

I walked then took the train last year of elementary. Middle and high were all train.
My niece takes the school bus to middle and her same age cousin takes the train. She goes to a magnet in UWS. My nephew takes the public bus.
