DS is only 19 months old and I am in no hurry to start potty training but lately, he's started telling me that he has gone pee-pee or poo-poo in his diaper. He even tells me while he is doing it sometimes. Several people have mentioned that that is a sign he is ready to train. I am not sure. Should I get a potty and just start talking about it? How did you know your LO was ready?

can't really help as we are in a similar situation. we are taking the sings to mean that our Lo is ready for more "exposure" to potty training. she has a little potty (that we move around the house) and a seat for the big potty. we do lots of naked time. and are introducing unides soon (to help her understand/feel the sensation). as she often tells us after the fact. (LO is 18 mo.) good luck!

I introduced the potty around 18 months with both kids but let them take the lead

LO was almost 27 months and she didn't want to wear diapers anymore. She was always diaperless after naps.

@Munchkin: Yeah that is what I was thinking. Maybe get a potty or two and start talking about it more. Get a book or something.
@Mamaof2: How long did it take them? What did you do? Just have the potty there or show them how to use it? Put them on it sometimes? -
Also, he goes to daycare so I don't know how that might affect things.

@travellingbee: PT freaked me out - ha! There was no way I was going to let a kid be naked in my house and risk pee and poop on the floor so we offered the potty and that was about it. DCP starts PT at 2.5 which means they try every 2 hours but at home I continued to let them do their thing.
DS was 2 yrs 9 months when he asked for underwear so we bought it and that was that! He had 2-3 accidents total.
DD we did the same approach - she was 2 yrs 11 months when her teacher suggested we try underwear - I was NOT confident but went ahead with it. She had a few accidents a month for awhile and then stopped.
As much as I hated diapers I hated PT more - my goal was to be PT by age 3 and they were
Oh and both kids would watch us pee so they knew how to use it. DS used a small potty but DD refused and would only use the big potty. DS also quickly went from sitting to standing because he wanted to pee like daddy. DD also wanted to pee like daddy which you know, didn't work out for her

Sorry, no advice here, but DD has started showing us when she needs to be changed, so we're going to start putting her on a little potty just before bath time every day. Absolutely no pressure on her, but given that she shows so much interest when we go, we thought it couldn't hurt (she's 17 months), right? I hope? ;P

@NurseMommy: Good idea-- we'll try putting him on it before bath too. I don't really care if he's potty trained anytime soon but I also don't want to ignore any interest that he has.

He started talking about pee and poop. His signs also were becoming more obvious. We started day training on the encouragement of our daycare. They wanted him trained earlier than we initially wanted to. It was a bit rough a couple of weeks ago, but it's gotten better. He doesn't like going to the bathroom, but he does go once he's on the potty.

our LO gets encouragement at daycare to go in the potty. she and another child sit and read books while on the potty. (this was all pre diaper rash).
@ TravelingBee: books, talking about the potty, and keeping our bathroom door open are also a part of how we are trying to increase "exposure" and teachable moments.

DD is 21 months and she didn't give me any signs she was ready. I just got a little potty chair because it was on sale and figure I had to buy one sooner or later. I put her on it for the first time before bath just to get her comfortable and she peed right away. I was shocked! And so every night after that I would try the same, put her on it before bath time, and sure enough she would go. So she got the concept really quickly.
I really had NO intention of potty training until she was 2 but since she seemed interested I just continued to put her on the potty a few times a day, and she does her business almost every time. She actually likes to use it and now she tells me when she need to pee or poo and points to her potty. I also read to her when she is on the potty and she loves it!
She's still in diapers and pull-ups and I'm in no rush to make the switch to underwear. Sometimes she goes in the potty, sometimes she goes in her diaper. At daycare she goes in her diaper. No big deal. I’m pretty relaxed about it. I figure once I am ready to put her in underwear I will get more serious and consistent about it.

DS started saying these thing a around 20 months so I got a potty and he has been peeing on it ever since but isn't trained yet at 29 months. He now denies when he has gone to the bathroom it's annoying!

My son has been telling us when he goes poo poo for a while but he doesn't seem interested in taking it to the next level yet. When I take him to his potty he doesn't want it so we are waiting. He is 25 months

@winniebee: It took awhile for LO to get excited about peeing on the potty. He gets high fives when he does. He also tells us when he pees. This morning, he didn't before we left, so he made it clear he didn't to me. Then, I tell daycare that he hasn't gone yet as a warning to get him to the potty again soon. It's now funny to hear "I peed!" from him.

so hows it going?! (specifacaly those who have trained/are training a younger toddler)
our Lo was sitting on the potty often (not going tho). then we spent the day in undies yesterday. she had accidents as is expected. then when she did poop in the little potty she ....seems to be scared of the potty now (?) and doesn't want to sit on the little potty.
thoughts? help?
is it because she is "too" young ? did we miss the window? (there have been lots of "signs" of readiness. she pulls her pants down. she tells us afterwards. she has peed in the little potty before. she talks about the body parts and points to ours.
we did not use EC but i like the idea of early potty training.... just don't want to push too hard.

@Munchkin: Your experience sounds like ours, very promising at 19 months until LO pooped in the potty. That kind of freaked her out. Now she sits on it all the time but nothing comes out. Oh well.

@ Corduroy - good to know I am not alone? Did you stop potty training?
Our daycare will put her on the potty once every hour (and if she stays dry we can send her in undies)..... so I hope that if it doesn't happen at home then maybe it will happen at school at least.

Ours was a combination of things, although NOT that she was peeing on her little potty! We trained at 29 months, and our signs of readiness were:
- very interested in talking about pottying & changing her babies' "diapers"
- would generally tell us immediately after she had peed or pooped in her diaper
- could get pants on and off by herself
- unfortunately she was pooping at "regular" times...but it was usually nap & first thing when she woke upBut the biggest thing was that she needed to be "bathroom independent" when she started preschool at 2.5! So we figured out what time would work best for us (in between moves, visitors, etc), and just started with a modified 3-day method on a Sunday. The first day was pretty brutal -- since she didn't pee on the potty often before we started, she didn't quite get it. But she did understand *trying* to stay dry and was upset everytime she had an accident. Finally we had one pee success towards the end of the day, and after that, it (mostly) clicked! Still stayed close to home for the next 2-3 days, but had a manageable number of accidents (1 or 2 each day). I did training pants at naptime after the first week, but realized she knew the difference and finally just went cold turkey into underpants. No accidents yet. Nighttime we still diaper; she'll have stretches of dry nights but not 100%.
That was all 6 weeks ago, and things are going well. There is still an accident here or there, but only when we are at home! Mostly I think SHE was definitely ready, and WE needed the push of preschool to actually start.
