We night weaned my son around 6.5 months when we sleep trained. He had been showing signs that he wasn't waking because he was hungry so my husband took over sleep training my son so he couldn't smell my milk. I continued to nurse during the day so we just made sure to put him immediately on the breast when he woke up.

She finally started STTN here and there so we knew should could make it all night. Now we kinda do CIO. If she does cry in the middle of hte night we will go in there but not pick her up. After a few nights she got used to it and doesn't expect milk anymore. Now she still won't fall asleep on her own but thats another issue.

Also, now that I stopped pumping at work, I didn't have enough milk to nurse her at 5:30pm and 7:30pm so we have also been adding a bottle of formula/WCM at bedtime to help hold her over through teh night.

My LO is 19 months and we co-sleep and he nurses several times in the night. We are dealing with this issue right now because I'm ready for the waking up to stop!

From what I've read it's difficult to night wean if you co-sleep (which we want to do) and also the night nursings are usually the last to go. I'm very interested to see what others have to say.

Once Finn had slept through the night (10-11 hours) a number of times, night wakeups became my husband's duty. That was all kinds of awesome, I'm not going to lie I'd go in and nurse if it was definitely needed, but luckily it only took a couple of weeks of him realizing he wasn't getting milk in the middle of the night to stop waking up at all. A couple of times he saw it was my husband and not me coming to get him, and rolled over like, "oh nevermind then"

@Mrs. Bee: that is tougher! Bedtime is definitely going to be the trickier time for weaning...that's the only time he really puts up a fight if his dad puts him to bed. I've been a huge fan of the super slow wean though, it's been easier on all of us and less sad for me to just take our time with it. We will see how it goes over the next couple of months!

@ohapostrophe: that sounds positively brilliant! DS is 6.5 month and has STTN 3-4 times in the last 3 weeks - amazing! We are still working on establishing solids so I feel bad taking away his night feeding (which changes every night, sometimes it's 10pm, 1am or 4am!). Perhaps by 9 months we'll be ready (which might be perfect timing since my dr said there will be another sleep regression). I will be keeping that idea in my head for future use.

My husband started going in for the wake ups instead of me. She doesn't get in a fury over not getting milk when he goes in but if I were to go in and not give her milk she gets enraged. She still wakes up at night but not as often and most of the time puts herself back to sleep. We've been traveling a lot though and whenever we travel I end up night nursing so we keep having to start back at square one.
