I breastfed (currently 8 months into my goal of 1 year) my mom did not for longer than a few days. I'm an only child.

We both bf, but I did it heck of a lot longer. I did it over a year. She did it a few weeks, months.

I was a formula baby. I don't think she tried breastfeeding at all. I still nurse my 15-month-old 2-3x a day.

My mom breastfed me for six months and I'm five weeks into breastfeeding. But I don't think I'll make it to six months since I go back to work in September.

I don't think my mom even tried to nurse me. I nursed LO until she self weaned at 14 months

My mom didn't bf me at all. I'm still bf my 5 month old and am hoping to continue for at least a year if not longer.

I'm breastfeeding. She didn't at all. Didn't even try. She said it was because she had to go back to work at 6 weeks and it just didn't seem worth it.

My mom breastfed me for 5 months (and one of my sisters 5 months too, didn't nurse my other sister at all). I breastfed my oldest for 2 years, 4 months. My youngest is still nursing at least 5x a day at 18 months.

I was formula fed. DS was born 3 weeks early and wasn't able to latch on so I'm currently pumping into bottles for him. I'm hoping to breastfeed in the near future though.

We both started out breastfeeding and had to stop. I think she may have been able to continue for longer but from the sounds of it I maybe had allergies? Plus she had supply problems. She bf'd a month! I pumped from a few days in to about five/six weeks. If I had known some of the pumping tricks I've read about on HB and not had ppd (literally was barely functioning at all) I really think I'd have lasted a long time! Oh well!

I think she made it, maybe, a month. We're still working on it at 7 weeks. Hopefully months and months more!

@highwire: she breastfed, but only for six weeks. I'm hoping for one year.

My mom breastfed me for 9 months and my sis for 11. I am hoping to BF for a year at least!

My mom EBF'd me and my brother for a year. (She was also a SAHM and never had to use a pump - she totally didn't understand my struggle..)

my mom breastfed me but dried up when she got pregnant (I was 5 months old)! she nursed my brother for a long time... she can't remember until when but it was definitely past 1!

Our experience was the exact same!
I had mspi --- my son had mspi
My mom list her supply --- I lost my supply
Both of us had to quit dairy and both of us lost supply within 6m ( her at 6m, me and 3-4m)

My mom BF for a few weeks with each of her 3 kids. M and I made it 3 months. Hoping to do better in the future!

I was formula fed, and I EP with my LO. My sisters were both able to breastfeed. Hopefully this time around I'll have more success with breastfeeding.

@TurtleDoves: M has MSPI and I am almost certain that I did too. My parents stories about me crying for 1 year straight sound pretty familiar...

Extremely similar, down to the start and the (likely) finish. Both of us struggled a tiny bit at first, both babies started nursing well on day 5 of life. Both of us nursed past two. My mother couldn't pump at work in the 80s, so eventually she switched to just nursing mornings and night. Overall very similar journey.

I'm breast feeding both my children. She only breastfed me for 2 weeks and didn't breastfeed my sister at all. She says she never had enough milk, but I wonder if she really understood the idea of supply/demand because breast feeding was a pretty smooth experience for me and my pregnancy and postpartum have been nearly identical to hers in all respects except this one area.

My baby isn't here yet, but I plan to breastfeed while my mom did not breastfeed at all (didn't want to).

My mom breastfed my bro for 3 months and me for six months. She said that it was painful for her EVERY time we latched on.... So I'm impressed she went that long. My 8 month old is EBF and we're hoping to nurse until at least a year.

my mom ebfed both boys for about 8 months. She stopped because she lost quite a lot of weight.
I'm still bfing at 11 months (although never exclusively).

She breastfed but stopped at 6 months because she says I lost interest.
I am BFing still at 4 months and hope to go at least another year

My mom BF'ed my sister and i both til we were 2. Zero problems. I'm two months in with DS and we've struggled but we're making it now! I hope to keep going til he's one or beyond.

I was BF for 6 months with a shield, then weaned to formula because I wouldn't nurse without the shield and she was sick of it she also EBF my twin sisters and my younger brother for 12 months.
I BF for almost 11 months then weaned to formula because I dried up after getting pregnant again

My mom EBF-ed both me and my sister for one year each. According to her she had no issues with breastfeeding other than some minor pain latching at the very beginning. She had one clogged duct once. Ugh.
My breastfeeding experience could not have been any more different. I planned to EBF, but my milk never came in. I worked with a lactation consultant and tried absolutely everything under the sun, but had to supplement early on. My daughter got a small amount of breastmilk for her first 3 months, and then I had to call it quits due to no supply.

She BF'd and looooved it. I pumped for 3 months.
I'm sure breast feeding was a HUGE challenge in the 80's. the pumps sucked! An (older) friend at work was telling me all about it!

My mom EBF-on demand both my brother and I for more than 1 year each. She said the only reason she was able to do it for so long was because she was a SAHM, if she had had to go to work full time along with BFing and trying to pump, she would have switched to formula.
My milk never came in; so we formula fed from the start.
My grandmother was also unable to BF.

my mom BF me for a couple months until she went back to work. i've been BFing for 6.5 months and want to go til at least 1 year, maybe longer!

My mom BF my brother and me. She nursed me for over a year. My brother and I are 17 months apart and I don't know when she weaned him.

@Mrs. High Heels: I think our moms were similar. I heard from basically every older generation women in both our families say they didn't produce enough milk.
@highwire: My mom "says" she "thinks" she BF each of us ~ 1 month. But her complete lack of any BFing understanding makes me think she didn't even do it for a week. Both my parents asked for formula the day we came home from the hospital and had NO CLUE about pumped milk. I'm at almost 5 months and hope to continue for the first year.

I was breast fed till I was 2 and a half. My LO is almost 11 months and we are going strong. I plan to ween when he feels ready. Good for you breaking the mold!!!

My mom breastfed me for 10 months and then I weaned myself. She breastfed my sister for just over a year and my brother for just over 2 years!
I breastfed E for 3 months due mostly due to health issues on his part and partially due to extreme setbacks on my part. I'm hoping to nurse DD for longer!

We both breastfed; she breastfed me for 3 months, middle brother for 4 months and baby brother for 6 months. My son is 6.5 months old.

She breastfed until 3 months when she moved to formula for both of us. It's what you did back then.
I am still breastfeeding at 13 months...
pomegranate / 3414 posts
I breastfed DD for 14m, I am currently at 10.5m with DS. My mom did not breastfeed me (or my sister, we're twins) and was actually given medication to prevent her milk from coming in.

My mom breastfed me until 6 months. She would have gone longer, but apparently after I started childcare I developed a bottle preference. She nursed my brother until age two (he was not in childcare until then). I nursed Ellie until age five and some change, and will nurse Lorelei until she self-weans. My mom has been a wonderful support to me and I consider her a bf role model of sorts.
