I want a bike! YEARS ago I bought a specialized bike and loved it but I rarely used it - so looking back not sure it was worth the $$.
Are there cheaper good bikes out there? Can I / would you pick one from amazon based on reviews?
My requirement: I want a purple bike

I got a bike last year. We went to a bike shop and I was very specific with what I wanted (a bike that was comfortable to ride a few miles on paved roads/paths). I was clear that I was not interested in triathlons or long distance bike races and did not want that type of bike.
They showed me some things that met my criteria and I rode the bikes I was interested in around the parking lot, then made a decision.

@Bluebonnet: care to share what it cost? I would like ot spend around $150 but when I think of bike shops I think $300+

I'm thinking it was $200. It was definitely not $300.
I thought about ordering on Amazon, but then you have to assemble the bike (and many of the bikes I was looking at recommended you have a bike shop assemble it to make sure it was safe). It just seemed like a headache I didn't want to deal with.

What are everyone's thoughts on a used bike? IE Craigslist/rummage sale?

I would definitely go try them. I bought a bike 3 years ago at a bike shop and I'm glad I tried it. I'm average height and thought I would need a small bike but needed a medium one. If you go to a dedicated bike shop, they almost always sell used bikes, so you could get a better deal that way and they usually provide some sort of guarantee or tune ups. You could do Craigslist or something like that, but you would probably want to take it to a bike shop for a tune up and make sure it is in rideable condition.

I would first think about what's the purpose of the bike. Do you want one to ride on trails? Commute? Just ride around the neighbourhood? If you're just looking for a comfy and casual bike, i would think about a cruiser. If you want to go on the trails then i would go with something more of a mountain bike. You'd probably want a hybrid style with thinner wheels if you want a commuter bike.
Bike shops have great end of season deals and i like how you have a knowledgeable person helping you out.

I recommend going to a bike shop. You don't have to spend $$$ on a bike, but you should try them out and have someone who knows what they are doing put them together. I own a Giant commuter bike and it was maybe $500, but I haven't had a single issue with it, it's lightweight, and it does what I need it to. I hated my cheaper Walmart bike. It was so heavy and the gears didn't work.

@Mamaof2: Let me know if you find a purple one - I'm on the hunt for a purple one as well... but I don't want to spend more than $150. I just need one to go on family bike rides around our neighborhood with.
