How do you keep your infant's nails short?
I just saw the Buzz B. on Amazon and have heard of the Piyo Piyo scissors. Could you just use a really really soft nail file?

The nail file they gave me in the hospital the first week, and these infant clippers after that. http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B004ZLZG2M/ref=pd_aw_sim_75_6?refRID=1H4TYQPP3DWXKHWB6HBW

They fidget way too much for scissors

Piyo Piyo or the nail file. I do it when she is drowsy or feeding. A hard nail file is fine...I just don't use a pointy one.

I use nail clippers. I cut his nails when he's sleeping. Otherwise, it ain't happening.

I use nail clippers with a light up tip. They came in my little first aid kittens I find the light helps a lot.
Also after the first few months I started turning in the tv while I clipped to keep her still. Now I strap her in the high chair facing the TV.

@danda: same! Love piyo piyo scissors! I wil files seems more difficult, and I really hate using nail clippers for litle ones. Mom my said she would just literally chew/bite our nails off when we were newborns

@lady grey: my mom also bit our nails but I read somewhere that there is a risk of infection.

@regberadaisy: I have the same, but mine doesn't have a light. I love them.

@danda: hmm I think that would only happen if you bit their skin and got bacteria from your mouth into baby's blood stream. That seems very unlikely...

We have the piyo scissors and a file but at six weeks old have never used either. Her nails just peel off partially and we pull them the rest of the way off.

I just used a file when she was a newborn and then I started using the Piyo Piyo scissors. Love them!

I used the safety first clippers until recently (LO is 20 months). Now I just use my adult clippers.
I've always clipped his nails while he was sleeping. In an emergency I can clip a few while he watches cartoons, but if he's awake he wants to play with the clippers.

safety first nail clippers here too... I clipped his skin once, he hardly seemed to notice. Otherwise, no problems.

We use Gerber nail clippers that my parents used to use on my brother 20 years ago, ha

Piyo Piyo scissors! At first the thought of using a scissors on baby freaked me out, but they really are easy to use when baby is sleeping or drowsy.

In the beginning few weeks, DS' nail just fell off because they were so thin and frail. We used a pair of Safety 1st baby clipper (DH did it when DS was reallyl small, because I didn't trust my unsteady hands). But since he's been older/bigger, I took over (same nail clipper). DS is fine during nail cutting and we've never had issues with it. In infancy, I used to do it while nursing him before bed. Now in toddler hood, he just sits and reads a book while I do it.

I've always just use regular baby nail clippers (the ones that come with the health/safety kits for babies). They've worked great since day 1!!

I have the piyo piyo scissors! Love them! I can cut her nails awake and does a pretty good job. I just file them after for any edges.

@Rainbow Sprinkles: ditto! baby nail clippers.
I tried the Zoli b nail buzz thing and it was great at first but the filing pads got dull quickly. Once I learned DD would tolerate regular nail clippers, I made the switch and have been using them since Day 1 for DS.

We use the American Red Cross clippers we got in our first aid kit for the baby. It looks like this:
Its not fancy but I find it works better than the other ones I've been gifted and the file was a no go for us. When DS was a tiny newborn, we did it while he was sleeping. When he got a little bigger, we sat him in our lap while putting the TV on or while one of us wore him. Now at 8.5 months, I just sit him in my lap and clip away while tucking his other arm under my arm. Feet and toenails are actually harder than fingernails! I only bite hangnails.

I asked the nurses at the hospital when LO was born what we should do, and they said that we shouldn't use a nail clippers or scissors at first, because the nail isn't well set in the nail bed for awhile (I forget how long it takes - maybe 6 months to a year?). Consequently, the added pressure can cause it to fall off. They recommended filing, peeling (like @Pawprints), or chewing - I peel after a bath, when the nails are soft, or whenever they start peeling in their own.
@Lady Grey: and @Danda: So your moms' solution is still recommended. And I agree, so chance of infection. Less actually than if you nipped LO's finger with the clippers.

Regular nail clippers - and let Daddy do it! He is surprisingly good at it

The files never worked for us. His little nails were so paper thin, it just didn't work. We use scissors.

When he was I'd say 5 months and younger I used the Zolli buzz thing.
After 5 months I started using this and I LOVE it. It has a magnifying glass (optional).

I used the clippers. Past tense 'used'- now she will only let my mom cut her nails with the nail scissors.

I use the piyo piyo scissors and they are great! My DD is 9 months and I have to give her something in the other hand to distract her while I trim her nails. It's really an annoying task to do with her. I then go over with just a regular file and file them smooth. My son just sits in my lap and lets me cut his nails.

Regular nail clippers. He just sits there and lets me cut them. I tried a file, but his nails were too thin and they bend, just like mine.

filing seems like a pain in the butt. i use nail clippers. did it from when they were all young and none of them mind it.
