How do you dye your hair?
Do you wait till baby is sleeping and do it from the box?
Do you go to a salon?
Do you get someone else to watch the baby?
Are you pregnant and secretly still dying your hair (no judgement, I did twice, in 2nd and 3rd trimesters)?
Do you dye it when you're in a bad mood? Or a good mood? Or during a life change? Or when your roots are showing? Or for halloween?
(Can you tell I want to dye my hair again?)

I haven't dyed my hair in over 5 years! I used to go to the salon and would go usually when the seasons changed. I stopped dyeing my hair because I'd miss my natural hair color after a few weeks and would end up dyeing it back.
I know plenty of people who colored their hair during pregnancy!

I am in the good mood/bad mood/ life change camp, but I haven't dyed it in a year since before I found out I was pregnant! I am thinking of having highlights done, and would have a friend come here and do it or go to a friends mom who has a 2 seat salon in her home. Or, I might geta box of brown garnier and wait until she's asleep one night and do it.
Usually, I go blonde when happy or it's summer and dark when sad or it's winter time. I am long overdue now!

I did it while I was pregnant, just out of my first trimester. I went to the salon and now I always go to the salon just because it's better for me and for my hair. Less harsh chemicals and she does such a better job.

I need to start, I just sprouted a couple grays. I am convinced that even at the salon they can't get the color right, so I am going to experiment with some semipermanent color. I am not working now, so if I make a big mistake, not too many people will see it anyway, lol.

i don't have a LO yet, so it's pretty easy for me (other than on my wallet!)!
i have a TON of gray hair, it's gross. once i'm old, i'm cool with having a head of silver hair, but i'm only 28! if i could afford to do it every 4 wks, i would, but i usually have it done every 6 wks. my stylist (one of my BFFs) is on the hunt for the least harmful color to use on me so i can continue to color worry free when i do get pregnant (i don't think me stressing about my super gray hair is healthy, but i don't want to feel guilty for using chemicals during the 1st trimester, so this is an important quest for him, lol). i don't think i'd bring a baby in my salon, even if i don't use some of the more harmful treatments, other people do & you can smell it. yuck! maybe if i could put future baby next to an open window or bring them outside while my color sat i would, but it wouldn't be my first choice.

I went 4.5 months between colors between the before-pregnancy, and "into 2nd tri" dye. It looked pretty awful...

I usually go to the hair salon. I go to her maybe every 3 months. I can't go crazy anymore because with hair to my waist I can't afford the upkeep. It's like 200-300 a time. I'm cheap!
But other times when I get bored I just do my own thing. A week after my wedding I dyed 3 fat chunks underneath teal. Love it! I often will dye it crazy colors and then dye it back brown.

I just started to dye my own hair due to those darn greys. I wait until LO is asleep for the night and also that DH is home so he can take care of LO if he wakes. So far LO hasn't woken up during the times I dye my hair

I still get mine done at the salon (i'm in my first trimester) every 7 weeks or so. They don't slather my head in it, so I'm unconcerned with the amount I'm exposing myself to.
They do make vegetable based dyes...my SIL used them when she was pregnant.

I haven't died my hair in over 2 years. Hello white hairs. I used to go to a salon but stopped because we are tying to be frugal and debt free. My hair misses it though.

I have dark brown hair with a lot of grays. I've only had permanent hair dye twice. The month before I got pregnant I did the most drastic thing I've ever done to my hair - got it highlighted! I asked my hair lady if it was safe to get it dyed while pregnant and she said she wouldn't recommend it because if you have any scratches/pimples/openings in your scalp the chemicals go right into you. She said highlighting would be fine though. I've decided to swallow my pride and just have dark brown/orange/gray hair through my pregnancy. Looking really stupid for a while is an easier pill for me to swallow than potentially harming my baby.

I've been pretty experimental with my hair in the past. The last couple years though I've been getting highlights in it regularly. I have naturally straight very dark brown (I'm Korean but my hair has never been jet black) hair but I get very light highlights put in. I actually have an appointment this Saturday and thinking of going with the ombre trend, we'll see though!

I go to the salon for highlights every 8-10 weeks, usually a 1/2 head but twice a year I get a full head. Since I'm going gray so bad now I get highlights and lowlights together so it's basically like a single process with highlights.
It's really expensive and I'm sooo tempted to just do a single process, but that would mean giving up the blonde and I look so much better as a blonde!

I get my hair balayaged two or three times a year, and yes I did it while pregnant!
I just do it when it looks like it needs to be freshened up. I never get the same thing though....I change it up every time I get my hair done.

@Modern Daisy: could you do a single process blonde and then every other time have them throw a few foils in too? might save you some. but with the all over color you have to be more on top of root touch ups, so maybe it wouldn't save you anything=/ sometimes if you tell them you're looking for a way to cut back on what you're spending, they can come up with some creative cutbacks =)

@sheskrafty: I let my hair go in pregnancy, too--plus the pregnancy hormones made it look so flat, a good dye job probably wouldn't have helped.

@mrs. bird: Doing a single process blonde is possible, but like you said it would require a ton of upkeep since roots would be much more noticable than what I do right now. It's funny you say that, because the last time I was at the salon I asked what I could do to save money and my stylist was NOT happy about it and basically said there was nothing I could do, lol! One day I"m just going to go in and force her to give me a single process and call it a day, regardless of how much she whines
@pastemoo: When I was younger, I had light blonde hair but it got darker as I got older and now it's a light brown. I've been going gray since I graduated college, but now it's so bad that I have to go to the salon more frequently.

I have natural (dark?)blonde hair, but have been dying it (light/medium) blonde since I was 15.
I really really want to get it back to whatever color "natural" is but am not sure about the best way to do it.
I haven't dyed it since I've been PG - so 5 months dye free now.
My hair is long though, so it's starting to look really bad.
Any ideas on how I can get back to my "natural" color without all this in between ugliness?
I'm not opposed to dying my hair while pregnant, as my OB has given the OK.
Suggestions?

@looch: I use permanent. My first time I had my hairstylist do it and it was $80 to match to my natural hair color (dark brown). Because she was only doing my roots, I didn't think it was worth it. My roots grow out pretty fast so I went to a beauty supply store and found a dye so I could do it at home. If I was doing highlights or something more fancy, I'd probably go to a salon but since it's just root touch up, I do it myself. The dye cost about 10 bucks for 2 applications and I pick up a good conditioner to keep my hair soft. It's a lot of work (mainly washing the dye out becasuse you gave to be really thorough) but I do it to save money

Salon highlights. And I have had my hair highlighted during my pregnancy, I just waited until I hit 13 weeks before getting my hurr did.

@travelingbrit: Wait until baby--you'll probably want a new mom haircut, and then you can decide on color from there. (Probably they'd start with some kind of highlights? I'd ask the salon for a consult)
