If they're from close family or friends I kind of feel like it's lazy. Like my in laws have given me gcs. But then again it's preferable to things I won't wear, like earrings that aren't my style!
I'm also weird with gcs, I want to spend them on really really good stuff rather than "wasting" them so I hang on to them forever

I love them. I'm horribly picky, so I feel a lot less guilty with a gift card than a gift that is going to sit in the closet

I hate gift cards. They are a huge money maker for stores because people don't use them. You are essentially taking cash, making it less useful by severely restricting how it can be spent, and then giving it to someone who must take the time to visit a particular store and hopefully find something they need or want.
I appreciate the thought when people get me a gift card, but I really think they are a bit of a scam. I guess an exception is if you know someone shops at a particular store very regularly.
