i LOVE hand me downs so long as they're good quality. We got a whole bunch and a lot of them were stained and just kind of icky looking (they were like 4th time hand me downs). So as long as the source is legit, or they look new(ish) I'm all for them

I think LO is so fashionable she can pull off anything. That being said, we love hand me downs (: I figure I will take what I can get now and focus more on her wardrobe when she goes to school (:

Just sorted through a box of hand me downs and LO is all set for literally the next year of her life. I rather spend my money on Lo raber then something she will outgrow in a couple of months.

@anonysquire: yep. Ungrateful. Why don't you just tell the people stop giving you things. That way they can actually make money off their clothes instead of trying to be kind and gifting to someone who doesn't want them.

I am so grateful for the people who have handed clothes down to us. We are very lucky to have some very generous friends and family members.

I love them! DD has some very stylish baby friends, so it's always a treat to get a chance to rock some adorable outfits that might have been outside my means, at full ticket price. Anything that doesn't fit, or is made of a fabric that doesn't agree with DD's skin, I donate. Even the "ugly" stuff can look awesome with the right hair bow and frilly socks!

The hand me downs that I've received so far have all been either not my style at all or in poor condition. Most have came from my grandmas friends daughter and they have all been really used. I would love to get some nice hand me downs though!

I wish! All family members had girls and dressed them almost exclusively in dresses. We've gotten a few swaddles, one romper, and a pair of pjs
We're the first among friends to have kids so none there. Yall are lucky!

I LOVE hand me downs!! I have a cousin who has a daughter that's a year and a half older than my LO. She's giving us so much stuff. Whatever items I don't want, I give them to someone else.

I adore them. Keep the good stuff, pass on the rest. Some of my daughter's cutest stuff came from other families.

@mediagirl: if you got back of water damaged Disney themed kids clothes you would feel the same way. When I told people I was becoming a foster parent everyone handed me their not so gently used clothes. I've never asked for them. Thanks for being rude though

@anonysquire: Same here, what we get as hand me downs are either completely worn out, or look like they came from the late 80's. If they were my style I'd love them!
That said I'm all about buying used clothes, my Mom and I are headed to a garage sale in the morning and I'm hoping to outfit these 2 for the winter! Love getting great brands used for a steal!

@StbHisMrs: that's how I feel! And I'm no snob, most of my clothes and like 95% of my future kids clothes are from thrift stores.

@mediagirl: wow...?
@anonysquire: I'm with you. I love the idea of hand me downs, but most people (here at least) view it as an excuse to get rid of all the old crap they don't want and can't get rid of. musty, moldy, ripped, so stained you couldn't even tell what colour they started out as...
I am very appreciative of nice (read: clean, tidy, non-toxic...) hand me downs!

@Penny Lane: ya... Not sure that hand me downs was a reason for people to get huffy lol. I'm very appreciative of nice hand me downs, but I am not a dumpster!!

@anonysquire: I think they key is gently worn! It's not cool to give people your garbage. You should only hand down something that's in good condition that you would use yourself. That's the standard I always use before I give something to someone

@pinkcupcake: exactly!
@anonysquire: lol, "i am not a dumpster", love it!

I kind of love hate. I love being able to reuse something, but I'm VERY picky about style. I was just given a bag of clothes and went through it. I kept a few things I would normally not keep because of the style, but I figure they are newborn/1 month sized, so DD will only wear them a few weeks.

@anonysquire: you said, "I guess I'm going to sound ungrateful." I just agreed with you. I don't see how that's rude.

@anonysquire: see I did this baby thing all wrong, I was the first of my friends so they get my maternity clothes, baby gear, clothes...
My bestie is the smart one, her son is 10 months younger than mine (she was even smart enough to have a boy like me too! lol).

I like hand-me downs. DS isn't crazy about them anymore, though, cause usually they contain a character that is no longer "in". He's pickier than me.
We don't get hand-me-downs too often, though. Maybe once LO gets here, the offers will come, but it'll depend on the source. If I have a boy and he gets boy clothes from my friend who has already had the clothes go through her 3 boys, I'll pass. But, gently used stuff is nice.

We didn't get anything handed down, except some ratty onesies from my sister in law. I know she meant well, but they couldn't be used.
I have handed stuff down to my other sister in law and I was very picky about what I offered her. Nothing stained, pilled, torn. I also kept what I considered sentimental because I don't want her to feel badly about returning stuff or not.
eta: I found in Europe though, it's different than in the US. People are more private and it's thought to be insulting if you offer your old stuff to someone else. It's better to just donate to an aid organization.

When LO was an infant, I might have felt squeamish...but now I would love it. We have never gotten any hand-me-downs, though. So sad! And I usually send some to a friend with a DD who's 11 months younger than LO, but I'm never sure if she likes it or not.

I am not a fan of hand me downs. I would only accept them from my sister or a very close friend, and even then would probably be picky about what I took.
ETA I also think that just because it's free doesn't mean you need to be across the board grateful...if something is damage, not your style, or just plain ugly, I would not use it!
