Necessary evil, lol. Is that an okay answer?

We will cut C's in the Fall. The most time she uses it for is naps, and while I am not her primary caregiver/napgiver, I struggle with asking daycare to cut it when it would impact her sleep, and her daycare buddies.

Could you work on leaving it in the crib?

If DD manages to con us into having it outside of nap time or sleep related time, there is often a trade for it. I will offer her a piece of cheese or something (candy has been used, lol) and she gives it up without issue.

I never really liked seeing it in DS' mouth all day long. It did kind of get on my nerves. Luckily, he weaned himself from it around 15 months. I had a niece who kept it until she was in PK4. She would talk with it in her mouth. That really irked me.

@hilsy85: We have to rotate our hiding spots, or sneak it from the hiding spots, she doesn't miss a trick with where it goes when she doesn't have it!! Agree on the daytime use, if it gets her better sleep (especially naps, though now poop is wrecking her nap, haha!) and I struggle with cutting it just before new baby that will likely get it and so much change will be happening, so suck it up and let her have it and work on cutting it late summer/early Fall completely while I am home with her again.

I don't believe in them, personally.

I classify it in the category of "if I had known, I would never have used it."

Going through the same thing here with my 17 month old. The pacifier has definitely been a lifesaver for us in the past, but I feel like he's getting more, not less, dependent on it, as he gets older. We mostly avoid it at home besides nap/sleep, but it's so hard when he's throwing a fit in the grocery store not to give it to him, knowing that will lead to immediate peaceful shopping (for me and the other customers!). And my DH is the same way. He doesn't understand why I'm starting to resent it so much and thinks nothing of giving it to him at home just because he's whiny...probably because he's not the one who's going to have to figure out when/how we get rid of it!

Yea, I don't like them. We used them a lot when he was smaller, and then sleep trained and got rid of them. The only time we use them now are in the carseat, otherwise he freaks out. BUUUT, lately, he has been finding them and playing with them and putting them in his mouth and smiling with it. haha it's so cute, but I should really cut that ish out!

I'd rather not introduce one if LO doesn't seem to benefit from one. But if he does then whatever. We will cross that bridge later.

I'm not a fan on toddlers playing/going everywhere with a soother in their mouth but I totally get that sometimes you need to do what you need to do to survive. LO is only 5 months old but I'm hoping to keep her soother to nights and naps only. I might be eating my words in a year!

Sometimes I wish DS would like them more, but then he's only 3 months so he's still pretty little. He prefers to comfort nurse but occasionally I can get him to take the paci instead. I think daycare gets him to go to sleep using one, but he's incapable of keeping it in his mouth. I am not a huge fan of older toddlers with them so considering he's not totally addicted we'll probably get rid of them in a few months. But of course that could change down the line.

I don't like them, TBH. We gave C one as an infant and she stopped liking them around 4 months (thank goodness!). By BFF's 3 year old daughter still uses one and it's been a battle to try and get her off of it.

I am not a fan of them even though my son was obsessed with his pacifier from 3-8 months. Around 8 months we just stopped taking them out of his room and used them only at nap time. Then one nap my husband forgot to give it to him at nap and he slept the same so that was our cue that he didn't need them anymore. Around 10 months he would find random pacis and play with them but throw them away after a few seconds. At that time, I got him to put them in the garbage. It really helped us to just have them out of the house altogether.

It is a personal pet peeve of mine to see walking, talking kids with a paci in their mouth. I don't know why it bothers me so much though!

I don't love it but he was given one during his NICU stay so it was somewhat out of our control! He is almost 14 months now and we are starting to just offer it at nap & bed time. Hoping to be completely weaned off of it by the time he is 2. My nephew loved his but one day around 2 years old he took it out of his mouth, put it on the table and never went back for it.

I pulled the paci around 4 months because they honestly gross me out. The crud that builds up around the base (especially in house with pet hair) was so gross. I boiled them all the time but it never seemed like enough. DS is now 17 months and while he doesn't have a paci he does seem to want to nurse more often and for longer periods so maybe that sucking comfort is just something that increases again around this age?

I think once sleep is figured out, your young toddler is happy and healthy and life is relatively calm, it is probably a good idea to take it away. Before kids I used to think I wouldn't use one, but for my kids they were a necessity and they allowed us to do a lot of things that we wouldn't have been able to otherwise(mainly family weddings, etc.). And with being a thumb sucker into elementary school, I knew I didn't want them to take on that habit. We took my LO #1's pacifier away at 16.5 months (after travel had been completed and we weren't going to be traveling for a few weeks) and it took about 3 days. My #2 is approx 11 months and she is almost sleeping through the night and although I don't replace it at night, I am happy for her to have some sort of comfort object. After some upcoming vacations and travel is complete, we might discuss a game plan. My thought is if they are sleeping in a crib, then a pacifier is okay.

I don't care for them, really. But, I get bothered seeing 2 year olds with them in their mouths.

My MIL bought me some for this LO, but I told her no thanks. I didn't bother with DS, and I won't for this one.

I really really lucked out with pacis because Wagon Jr. loved them as a newborn, dropped them once he found his fingers, and stopped sucking his fingers after he turned 2ish? I think. Super lucked out with that kid. We were very flexible and let him do whatever it took to self-soothe.

With my second, however, I tried a million times and bought every kind of pacifier out there and she just would not take one. She self-soothed (if you can even call it that) by scratching her ears bloody. We had to keep socks on her hands at all times, and pretty soon she figured out how to bite the end to pull it off, like a boxer pulls off their gloves. She did grow out of the scratching, thank God. At around 15 months she started sucking on her blankie. It's pretty gross and I wish she wouldn't walk around with it in her mouth like that. And she sucks on it all night. We have six and give her a fresh one every day. But I dare not take it away.
