We were lucky to have several friends have kids right when did so there was build in friends with DD1. DD2 has a friend at daycare but otherwise we were about a year too early! When our friends kids get a bit older it will work out but right now they are too young. What about you?

Our town has a large parents group that will set you up with a play group of similar age children. We first signed up just for my oldest because my younger one was a baby and not into playing. Our group never really worked out but I became good friends with one of the moms and she introduced me to another mom who introduced us to another and the 4 of us formed our own playgroup. I recently signed up for a second group for my younger son and this one is already established so we've met up a few times but I connect better with the other group so we'll see if we stick with it.

We go to drop in centres, play cafes, I pick up moms at the playground, we've hung out with the siblings of DD1's classmates. It takes effort, but it's worth it.

@oliviaoblivia: playground is probably our best bet. I work during the day so it's nights and weekends for us.

I did a mommy and me type class when my older was born and have stayed really good friends with the moms, 2 years later. As it turns out we are all having second babies within 6 months of each other so built in playmates for the babies.
Not so great at making play dates with families we meet at the park. I've gotten a couple numbers and we say we will make play dates then don't follow up. As the weather he's worse and we can't meet at the park we might be better- but I'll have a newborn then.

I formed a playgroup with a few moms I met at the library. The majority of our playdates come from school friends though.

@LuLu Mom: I find that playgrounds are the best on weekends and after school because you meet working parents. We made a lot of neighbourhood friends through the playground, of whom were working parents.
