DS won't really let me brush his teeth. His closes his mouth as tight as he can, or he blows raspberries. I'm using a baby toothbrush and the Tom's strawberry paste. Has anyone had any luck with the banana training toothbrush? How did you work with your LO on teeth brushing?

i lay row on his back on the changing table and either get him to laugh or to sing so that his mouth has to open at some point. but he doesn't haaaate having his teeth brushed, he just likes to suck on the brush to get all the toothpaste off.

I started doin the laying down thing as recommended by the dentist but now LO HATES brushing he teeth. HATES it. She'll cry for awhile after it's over.

I bought her an electric toothbrush. She's remarkable willing.

DS LOVES brushing his teeth! We have always let him brush his own (like...since he got teeth at 8 months) and then at the end we do an additional brush real quick. He has always brushed his teeth with daddy right after breakfast in the morning and they brush their teeth together. It's one of E's favorite things. Then he brushes again with me in the bath at night!

I sing the Brush your Teeth song and she usually lets us.
We use the banana toothbrush and the regular one, but only use water, no toothpaste. -
I let her play with it first and usually she will let me brush them.

Strangely enough, she has always enjoyed her toothbrush. She has a special toothbrushing song that I play on my phone while I brush, and I sing along, like a goon. I set her on the bathroom counter when we brush and use a handheld mirror as a reinforcer.

I just let her play with the toothbrush at bathtime, and then I pretend to brush mine with her toothbrush, and then I can usually sneak a quick brush of hers in again.

She closes her mouth, sticks her tongue over her bottom teeth. Nothing works. It is a fight evey night in our house.

Gah I am so jealous of those whose Los love brushing teeth! Mine was ok with it til I implemented the dentists way of doing things. The dentist said I should do it this way even if she puts up a fight because it was better but now it's turned into a sure fire tantrum twice a day.

LO is 24 months. She hates letting us brush her but if she watches teeth brushing cartoons on youtube she will do her own. She can watch as long as she brushes- if she stops I turn them off. I also occasionally (when I start to worry) lay her down on the couch, and try to get a quick brush in before she completely freaks out.
Full disclosure- we only brush once a day. -
we sing the same song every night ("when you wake up in the morning, its a quarter to one..." etc). I just calmly tell her "we have to brush your teeth now," when she refuses. Eventually she lets me, although sometimes we just stand there for awhile. Sometimes I have to sort of pin her arms a bit, and she arches her head away from me, but I get in there.

LO is 12 months. He doesn't hate it but doesn't love it either. It usually helps if I pretend to brush my teeth at the same time. Or if I let him "brush" my teeth. At least that distracts him long enough to allow me to get at his teeth.

Electric toothbrush changed the whole tooth brushing experience. We actually use it along side a regular and LO switches with us on which one he uses at the same time

I'm with @Smurfette:, nothing works for us and it's a huge struggle. He clamps his mouth shut and thrashes his head back and forth. When I finally trick him into opening (usually by singing or making him laugh), he covers his bottom teeth with his tongue.
I'm going to get him an electric toothbrush this weekend! Hoping it works.

It was a huge struggle for us for a few weeks, but it seems like after he realized that I would brush them whether he wanted me to or not, he got much better, and I can now ask him to open his mouth and he will.

We either get laughing or a tantrum, last night was a tantrum and I had to pin her arms down. We got an electric toothbrush and tried it for the first time last night, I think it was also the last time

I sing the silly "Brusha Brusha Brusha" song the Frenchie(?) sings in Grease, brush my own teeth with him, let him brush his teeth for a bit, then let him brush my teeth. And standing on the stool in front of the mirror so he could see his reflection helped.

We started fairly young and before introducing the toothbrush she watched us brush a lot.
Thankfully we only had a short stint where she didn't Want to. For the most part we started with everyone brushing together in the morning.Sometimes I pull out the Daniel Tiger brusha, Brusha, brusha song and that seems help!

I'm taking notes......my son just eats the toothpaste off the brush then clamps his mouth shut. I would love to find a solution to this daily struggle.

I use an electric and we have a routine now where she knows it's my turn first then her turn. She has gotten pretty patient lately!

Well, we have been brushing since he had a tooth at 8 months and he still hates it at age 2 and downright refuses a lot of nights. Here is what has helped:
- Letting him choose his brush and paste (multiple options including an electric toothbrush)
- Elmo brushgin teeth song
- Step stool so he can reach water
- Letting him do it himself
- Telling him he can't have X treat again if he doesn't brushHonestly I think it's a kid's demeanor that will dictate whether you can brush their teeth or not...not whether you have done things correctly, because we have and he still won't let us do it. I can't pin him down and brush them. He clamps his mouth shut and shakes his head wildly. He does the dead fish/collapse if I try to brush them while standing up. I'm still afraid his teeth are going to fall out of his head by age 3.

We started brushing at bath time and I would brush my teeth along with him, and he loves to imitate. He also likes treats, so I found a chocolate flavored toothpaste at Whole Foods that he loves. We go through ups and downs of loving and disliking it. Any time he really seems to dislike it, we back off and try to make it fun again.

I tried letting him play with the brush on his own for a minute tonight while I brushed my teeth. He shoved it down his diaper and ran away

Electric toothbrush! I used to have to restrain him to brush his teeth, now he cries because we have to stop.

@grizz: hahahaha, go C! R is hit or miss. I'm not using toothpaste yet but I have the banana toothbrush for her. I think I read here to try to brush LO's teeth while in the bath. We have to do that more often because it worked the time I tried it.
Going to try to get him again before he goes to sleep!
