The warm weather has brought them back in droves
Since we have a toddler it feels like we will never get rid of them. Ugh!

Figure out where they get in and plug it. You might want to consider calling a pest control company.

It's an old house so it isn't the best at keeping bugs out. I'll see if I can do something about that though. I'll also run the pest control idea by my bosses.

My whole town was built on an ant hill. Its horrible. I didn't even think about when/if I have kids and how the ants will cause a problem on my patio. @travelingnanny: I really think a monthly pest control service is a great investment. I would do it but can't because I'm in a condo/townhome.

My mom recently taught me they HATE cucumbers.
She had a bunch in her kitchen around the fruit bowl and cut up a cucumber and put slices on the counter. Sure enough, next morning they were gone!

Mix borax with jelly and spread it on a piece of masking tape in areas where you find them. Make sure it's well away from pets and kids. But it works wonders as long as they find it! And you'll know if they do because they will swarm that sucker. Takes a couple of days, but they bring it back to the nest and it clears them out.

@MaryM: wow! I'm tempted to try this if it really works. Do you think it would work for those nasty big carpenter ants?

Have you heard of diatomaceous earth? It's a nontoxic bug killer, safe for humans and pets.

@californiadreams: I'm not sure. It worked on the tiny ones! There were hundreds of them before we put out the cucumbers

Terro ant killer! They're these traps filled with a sweet substance - the ants go in them, feed on it and take some back to wherever the home base is, and it kills them! Awesome stuff, I absolutely love it. It only took about 3 days for us to see pretty much no ants.

Ditto on the Terro ant killer. I used it at our old house and it worked great. We have moved though and we are more in the desert/not in the city anymore so we have pest control. Mostly because of spiders since I can't handle that crap.

Borax mixed with powdered sugar has worked well for us, although obviously you have to keep an eye in it with pets and LO's. The best thing that worked was to find the little place in the floor they came up from, poured finger nail polish remover down the hole with a little dropper, then sealed the little hole with matte fingernail polish. I have no mercy for bugs inside my house.
