I can usually time errands like that with snack time so it doesn't seem like a bribe. It is simply normal snack time, just in the cart.

@sorrycharlie: ugh!!!! Same issue here. I usually bribe her with snacks and drinks and sometimes let her sit in the back of the cart, but then she tries to stand up and gets in trouble. I usually just go as fast as possible while she screams. Sometimes those carts with steering wheels are a hit

If I know we're going somewhere that I'm not going to let her walk, I try and get her excited about something specific we're going to do there. so like target I'll say 'we're going into target and we can get a snack at Starbucks and we can pick out a new book' or whatever and then as I'm putting her in the cart I keep talking about it so she's all excited and forgets that she's pissed at having to be in the cart. I also don't let her feet hit the ground if she's going in the cart. Pick her up from the carseat and directly into the cart. Once those little feet hit the ground, forget it lol.

Snack time!

I've never let him walk in the store, so I haven't had this problem yet. But I do have to have cookies in my purse because every time we shop he says more cookie, even if we had a snack at home right before. That can cause a meltdown.

I have never let my LO walk in the store so she is fine in the cart for now (or being held/worn)

LO (almost 2) doesn't sit in shopping carts unless they are cars. Definitely something LO2 will get used to, but I can't go back in time, so mostly we talk about what I need and how close he needs to be to me. If he stops to look at something, I usually will say "you can look for 10 seconds and then we need to go" (works maybe 70% of the time). I try to make it light and fun, because getting in a battle of wills never works.

But then if it all fails, I carry a screaming toddler through Target. Or I tickle.

I try to distract her by getting her to carry/hold stuff for me! She's pretty easy going when out and about though

My son loves those smaller shopping carts or baskets, he'll wheel it around and he helps me shop, I give him a "list" which is just scribbles on paper and he helps.

I never let him walk! If he is annoying about going in the seat, then I put him in the basket. If we are at the mall or something extended I am a sucker and get one of the fire truck carts or something. He doesn't tolerate the stroller very long.
