DD is starting Kindergarten and her school is nut-free so no peanut butter sandwiches. So I'm thinking I'll have to pack hot foods like spaghetti, chicken nuggets, etc. I just ordered her a Yumbox. Does that keep the food warm? Or do I need to get something else?

I use a thermos like this one. Fill it with boiling water while you prep breakfast, then fill with warm food.

I don't know about keeping food warm, but I pack those type of things into my kids lunches at daycare. It is cold when I pack it, and the kids eat it without being heated. It's no longer cold as it was without refrigeration for 3-5 hours (depends upon what time we drop off ).

@dolphin: i use a short thermos as well and do the same as @rattles by filling it with boiling water just before packing food. I recently bought something similar to https://www.target.com/p/lunch-bag-cats-cat-jack-153/-/A-53307047 and it can fit a thermos container, and a few snack boxes.

@dolphin: she has a PBK classic lunchbox. It will fit either this (with plenty of room for a few other things) or her Bentgo, but it won’t fit both.

@dolphin: on days when she has a home lunch we usually pack things like turkey and cheese sandwiches that just need an icepack. But in daycare we used a thermos to keep food warm. It really works but can be tricky to open

We just do cold food options for lunch, there are lots of them that don't include peanut products. Ham and cheese sandwiches, home-made "lunchables" (sausage/ham, cheese, and crackers), pinwheels, pasta salads, hummus and pita, etc. There are a million ideas on pinterest, or by googling cold lunch ideas for kids.

We send cold food options for lunch when we have to pack one. A favorite is cream cheese bagels, yogurt, and fruit with either lemonade or chocolate milk. I just refrigerate it the night before and pop an ice pack in it the morning of and it stays nice and cold.

We do similar to @rattles: ... prep food in the AM, let the Foogo jars sit with boiling water in them for 5-10 mins, then add hot food. I usually fill it at 7am and my girls teachers have said its still "warm" at 11:30/noon.

@rattles: @Mrs D: great tip on boiling water first! okay this might be a silly question but do you ever send hot AND cold food together in a lunch bag? For example, I was thinking of putting hot pasta in the Foogo jar along with yogurt, string cheese, or something which probably requires an ice pack. Do I just toss everything together in one lunch bag?

@dolphin: DD has a PB cold pack lunch bag, it has a freezable strap thing to hold stuff in place. When I send the foogo jar I usually send a smaller lunch bot with it with "sides" to go with her hot entree. (Sounds ridiculous) I strap the lunch bot down with the frozen strap and usually have packed it all the night before so the container is cold too...then I put the foogo next to it. Seems to work fine? I guess - she has never complained and she is not bashful about complaining...

@dolphin: This doesn't directly address your hot food question, but if your LO typically likes PBJs, you might want to try Sunbutter (make from sunflower seeds instead of nuts). I personally don't love it (aftertaste), but my daughters have accepted it in lieu of nut butters at school. Might be worth a try!

There’s also Wowbutter for the nut-free PB substitute. Full disclosure: we haven’t tried it or sunbutter, yet so I can’t compare them to anything.
We also pack (cold) lunch everyday. I’ve wondered if DS would enjoy warm food once in awhile and I imagine the answer is yes. I just haven’t figured out how to pull it off and how to pack it and if the extra effort is worth it,, so this is all helpful!
