Does it just become obvious that your lo needs more room? I worry that we are trying to jam her in there but we also want her to be safe.

It's obvious, yes. We changed them once before moving to the convertible.

For a rear facing infant, straps are supposed to be at or below shoulder height (once they're forward facing, it's at or above shoulder height). To check the tightness of the straps you pinch the strap webbing at the shoulder to see if you can bring it together (I can't describe that well...) if you can, it's too loose. We've had to raise LO's straps twice since she's been born (she's 11 weeks). The straps wouldn't stay on her shoulders, and I knew it was time for a change. I just made sure the new setting was at or below her shoulders.
