My house is a mess and I have no inclination/energy to clean. Hubs has been really understanding and has taken over the garbage and dishes, but we both need to work on the general picking up, as well as vaccuuming, etc.
How do you motivate yourself to clean? He's going out of town tomorrow and one of the days that he's gone I'll be off, so I'd love to get the hosue looking great, but am afraid I'll slack off.

DH usually does the bathrooms and he is gone this week and through the weekend, so I can't put it off. So I told myself as soon as I get the whole condo clean on Sunday, then I can have a pedicure and manicure.

I live close to family and know that someone could stop by at any time.
also, I love to decorate but I don't think my decorating looks nice unless the house is clean.
my husband is a clean freak and I like to keep him happy.
my LO army crawls and if I don't vacuum daily she will have a mouth full of dog hair.

Hoarders gets me every time too!
Also, I have a ton of light colored tile with a mostly black dog..it makes it overly obviously that I have to vacuum.

LO was my motivation to clean when she was army crawling. I used to want DH to come home to a clean house too, so I would clean.

I have been keeping my floors clean now that DS is crawling.
However... the counters and tabletop is a different story. I HATE HATE HATE doing the dishes. They are the bane of my existence. I would hire a maid just to do the dishes every day. Sooo they get put off... a lot .... like right now. But I've been getting bad migraines so that's my excuse most of the time 
DH is totally understanding and doesn't mind when I don't clean so that's a lot less pressure.

@mrbee: I have no idea... maybe because it's that one daily chore that has to be done twice a day all the time, there is never any break... not sure.. But even as a kid - I hated them. DH and I had made an agreement that if he tackled the dishes, I would do the rest of the house and we were both happy... but as lovely as it sounded, it wasn't practical with his hours (three 12-14 hour work days) so they ended up never getting done.

I like to put on some good music and just get it done, thinking about how good I'll feel when everything is clean. I have however, learned to go with my initial feeling. If I wake up and want to cry when I think about cleaning, I put it off 'til later in the day or even the next day. I am way more productive and less cranky if I am in the right frame of mind.

@Coco Bee: A few of the classes that we've taken have recommended using paper plates after LO gets here to eliminate some of the chores. We're thinking about trying that just for a week or two once she arrives.

We are totally guilty of using paper plates and plastic utensils for the first month LO was here...it was so nice only running the dishwasher once or twice a week, though!
I make myself do one chore a day - whether it be cleaning one bathroom, vacuuming the downstairs, cleaning up the kitchen, etc. Sometimes I still have to catch up on the weekends but it's not so overwhelming. I have also found I get a lot done in just 20 minutes - so maybe set up a playlist with 4 or 5 songs and try to get as much as you can before it's over?

I watch hoarders while I am cleaning. Sometimes I take a before pic so I can relish in the successful after pic. I beg my husband to let me hire a maid and hear all the reasons why we shouldn't. The best is when we invite people over bc then dH does most of the work.

I really love a clean house, so I think about how happy I'll be once it's done. Sometimes I'll put on a show and clean during commercials. I really don't like doing the dishes, so I watch
Netflix on my iPad while doing them.

I keep my house really decluttered and organized so that it's easy to clean. Then I just do it right as messes get made and always make sure to pick up after everything. So it never gets very messy.

Luckily our house rarely gets THAT messy. We have to keep it picked up if we leave the dog home alone or he'll eat whatever we leave out..... so that's motivation for me! And for deep cleaning, I have a cleaning lady

I'm lazy to clean also, but usually once I get started, I get really into it. Maybe that's all you need as well? Just force yourself to pick up a couple items here and there, and hopefully the cleaning bug hits ya?

I hire someone to clean for me once a month! And then I'm forced to pick up before they come so they can get to the surfaces. That and having company over helps.
