I have always sung it:
"Pat-a-cake, pat-a-cake, baker's man
Bake me a cake as fast as you can.
Roll it, and pat it, and mark it with a B,
And put it in the oven for baby and me!"
But my in-laws sing it:
"Pat-a-cake, Pat-a-cake, baker's man
Roll 'em up, roll 'em up
Throw it in the pan!"
How do you "pat-a-cake"?

I say it how you say it...but I've always said "patty cake". I had no clue it was pat-a-cake. that makes more sense!!

We do it like you but we say "patty cake". The one your in-laws use sounds more like a cheerleading chant

I say it like you, but DH and his family say it the way your in-laws do. Maybe it's a northern vs. southern thing?

@kiddosc: maybe. I learned it from my mom who grew up here (Texas) but both her parents are from New York & DH's family is from here for several generations.

@Mrs. Sunshine: I'm from Wisconsin, and DH and his family are from TX. Maybe that's just the way Texans say it DH also sings incredibly incorrect words to twinkle twinkle little star... but I think he came up with that on his own.

And throw (tossing the baby up in the air at the same time) it in the oven for N and me!"
A mom I used to babysit for sang it that way and I've done it the same way ever since.

I usually sing it like you (using patty cake), although I tried to change it once because it doesn't make much sense! I imagine mixing up cake batter, which means you can't roll it or pat it. So I tried saying:
Stir it, pour it, and mark it with a C (for baby's name),
then bake up a cake for (baby's name) and me!
My ILs always sing it your way, so I've felt forced to convert back to avoid confusion.

I changed it up a bit. I say "Patty cake" too And I spell out the child's entire name. Using Benny as an example....
"Patty cake, patty cake, baker's man
Bake me a cake as fast as you can.
Roll it, and pat it, and mark it with a B-E-N-N-Y (while using my index finger to spell out the letter in the palm of their hand).
And put it in the oven for Benny and me!"
