I'm from a big watermelon town and you should always look for one with a big yellow spot on one side. That means it was able to ripen properly in the sun (not that it's going bad!)! The thump test you might hear about doesn't do much!

I always pick the one that's heavy and sounds hollow when I knock on it. A man in Costco recently told me to also check the opposite end of where the vine was attached. The ones with the smaller "dot" are sweeter.
