I think my family is a little unusual in how we prioritize our finances/budgeting. I didn't think it was that weird until recently when a couple of extended family members criticized some of our (small) financial decisions and it got me thinking.
For instance, we don't have a TV or cable, no internet at home (except data on my phone), we don't take vacations, we spend very little on household items and furniture, and we coupon. Those are areas where we save a lot.
On the other hand, we buy high quality food, get family photos done often because they mean so much to me, and we buy fairly expensive things for Vi (clothes, toys, carriers).
I am very careful about what I spend on her (I shop mostly used through Facebook swaps and sales), but we do spend perhaps a disproportionate amount on her.
Is this a bad idea? Are we starting down a path to spoiling her? I never thought much of it until I got some comments about how much I'm spending on her first birthday (which I thought was fairly reasonable - $300).
How do you prioritize your finances? Do you get criticism for how your family choses to spend?
