HAHA. I used to pronounce it "erbs."
Then I heard Martha call them "h-erbs"
Her explanation went something like this.
"You wouldn't call Herbert, Erbert.."
I Martha

To other people we call them "erbs" but DH always jokes and calls them H-erbs. We mispronounce things as jokes sometimes, but will have to fix this as DS starts talking more!

My parents are British & pronounce the h. DH does it now too but mostly bc he thinks its funny to say it that way.

Erb! Merriam Webster has listed both pronunciations as correct but states erb first and says US also & British usually for herb.

I drop the "h" American style, but in England people giggled at me. Oh well, calling them h-erbs made me feel like I was saying a man's name, like saying I'd like some extra Herbs and Freds in my pasta sauce. LOL.

Does anyone know the British comedian Eddie Izzard? He was talking about the different pronunciations of words between the two countries (US and UK).
Careful, language:)

I say erbs. Actually I never say either version... it doesn't really come up that often for me!

I don't say anything. Every time I see the word, I say it both ways in my head: "Herbs...Erbs...Whatever." I avoid saying it out loud because I don't know how!

@Rubies: Haha you sound just like me... just classy enough to realize that you don't have class. Oops, I may be projecting my situation onto you! I'm sure you have tons of class...

@mrbee: No, you're absolutely right - I have enough class to know that I don't! LOL! I take it as an absolutely compliment!

@Rubies: Haha high five then! Or maybe it should be a low five?

(To answer the original question h-erbs...there's an 'h' in it! - and I'm British.)

Herbs!!!! I used to say erbs, but then moved to England and realised how ridiculous it is to drop the 'h' so I now say herbs. Why is the h sound dropped anyway? Is there a phonetic reason? We don't drop it in other h words like hard, hotel, hay, hot, hero etc. Just wondering...

I've always heard it's "erbs" so I say erbs but after reading this post I think I should say herbs because we do pronounce the"h" in herbivore.

I don't know. Since I've been living abroad for a few years, I'm not even sure how I say it anymore. Both?

erbs--Herb is a man's name to me. This makes me want to ask DH's grandma what she says--she is British.
