LO 2 (1.5) got hit in her face with a truck by an older boy (4 or 5) at story time. She was working on a puzzle when he ran up and whacked her with a truck....kids are crazy! 
I was consoling her so I didn't say anything but a grandma sitting near us told him that hitting isn't nice and you should say sorry.
How do you react? Do you just wait for the other kid's parent to discipline or do you say a few things, etc?

No... I might be an asshole, but if I see a kid being a jerk and no parent around and/or not paying attention, I will step in and will say something like:
"Oh, that wasn't very nice, can you say sorry?"
or
"Oops! Watch out for the little kids, you almost knocked him over!"
Or something like that.

If the parent is nearby, I will give him/her the "look." Usually the parent will step in and say something. If no parent is near, then I talk to the child and tell him/her what she did wrong.

I think it depends, if it was clearly by accident, I'll go up to her to make sure she's okay and then say, "I think it was an accident. Are you okay?" If the kid is still hanging around, I'll ask, "it was an accident right?" and then I'll have my kid say, "it's okay, it was an accident" ... usually the other kid will say sorry.
If it was on purpose, I'll go over to her to make sure she's okay but if she says, "no hitting, that's not nice" which is what I taught her to say, I'll ask the other child to say sorry. I don't care if the mom gives me the stink eye. manners are manners. I don't want to fight my kid's battles, but I'm also showing her that if she were to hit, she needs to say sorry. Hitting isn't tolerated. If the kid runs away, I'll check on her and tell her that "so and so hit you? that wasn't nice right? I'm sure he's sorry. We always say sorry if we hit, right?" and then I'll let her resume playing. But I'll keep an eye on that kid and if the kid comes near my kid, I WILL say, "hey you need to apologize for hitting her".

Depends on the situation, if it's a child I know (parents I know) I will say "oh no you need to be careful/be nice" but if it's a stranger's kid I would probably wait for the parents, or if there isn't one I've said "you need to watch for little ones, or slow down, ect."

it depends on the child's age and how much they understand. but i almost always say something (unless it's a baby)

Depends, if it was an accident or the kid is clearly too young to understand, I'll just go over and console DS. If it's an older child and he hits DS on purpose, I go after them and make them apologize. Luckily that only happened a couple of times so far.

Unfortunately my LO is a 'hitter' he is 2.5 and we work on it ALL the time. I am always horribly embarassed when it happens (I can usually foresee it and pull him from the situation). For me, as long as the parent/caregiver in charge addresses it I'm fine with it.

It depends, my son has been hit and he's also been the hitter. If the kids are of the same age, then I let them work it out. Usually, they get over it and move on. If it's an imbalance of power where one kid is a lot older, then I intervene.

It depends on how badly he/she hit DD. If it seemed accidental, i'm not going to intervene. I guess i'd have to see how it played out. DH was at a play cafe last week, and this kid punched a little toddler in the face (his mom was off in the corner with her friends)! He told the kid that it wasn't a nice thing to do, but we agreed that if that was our DD, we'd most likely say something to the mom (angrily).
I will usually say something to the kid, tell them that it wasn't nice and that we have to be more gentle (if it's an older kid who's doing it). @aegie: i'm the same - hitting is not tolerated. If the parent isn't going to be around when it happens, they need to be okay with someone else saying something.

@Freckles: I agree. I would want someone else to tell my daughter, "hey we don't hit. you need to apologize" if she hit someone and I didn't catch it. I don't find it rude or insulting at all. And I'm not yelling at the other kid either .... so ..... hopefully no one takes it like, "no one should discipline my kid but me" kinda attitude, but I stand by my hitting is not tolerated rule.

LO (1.5) doesn't let anyone get away with messing with her. She's the littlest in the neighborhood and has been the littlest at daycare for a long time. She will tell the hitter "NO!", scream at them or blow a raspberry in their face (thus spreading vile daycare germs). If I intervene it is to diffuse the situation after LO reacts. I'm sure I'll have to change that when she gets into hitting and biting back.

I did step in once and calmly explain that pushing (in my case) is not friendly behavior and someone could get hurt. After that, I started talking with my daughter about things she could say if a situation like that came up again. I try to stay back and let kids work out their problems, but not if someone could get seriously hurt or I see they need mediation. It's really uncomfortable for me talk to someone else's kid, but I would expect someone to speak with my child if she were the aggressor.

It depends on the situation - if the parent sees it and is right there and I know the parent I wait for them to react and console T if necessary.
But there was one time that an older kid that we didn't know ran up to him in a restaurant and flat out pushed him to the ground (hard, from behind) for no reason. The dad barely got up to speak with his child and so I had to give him a piece of my mind because the whole situation was just not oK.

I'm usually the parent that is out of line and will say something to the kid, like I did when one girl kicked and knocked down W on the playground at ChickFilA one time. I was pissed and yelled at her. he he

@BabyBoecksMom: I don't think that's out of line! Sometimes you can tell that a child knows that hitting is not nice, and that it hurts, and they do it anyway! If I see that their parents aren't going to scold them, I do it myself
