My son's not quite 6 months but he hates being in his carseat now so whenever we go out for errands I bring the bjorn and he's happy as can be in that. I usually go right when we get up from a nap - his max awake time is about 2 hours Sometimes he'll fall asleep in the car on the way home.

Depends on the shopping trip. If I'm staying close to home it's as soon as she wakes up from a nap and try to be home before she falls asleep again. If we're going across the border to shop in Detroit I try to plan her nap for the the car ride over then she is refreshed when we get there, and sleeps on the way home.

When Jacob was 2-3yrs(now 5) I always sat him in the back of the cart and always brought a snack. That age was the worst to keep him occupied, plus he always wanted to walk then, which was a pain in the butt, but would happily sit in the cart if target popcorn was involved. With Jax (5months) I just wear him. I really don't worry about naps either. He will fall asleep while nursing in the ergo anywhere and then fall back asleep in the car, if it's nap time.

If we're going to the mall, I go earlier. DS is down to one nap in the afternoon, so we get out the door and get there close to when they open. I get about 30-40 mins with him in the stroller, then he gets out to walk/run around for a while. Then I get him back in the stroller for a snack/sippy/book/toy while I try to finish up. We will get lunch then he will hopefully sleep on the way home. If I'm lucky I can even move him from the car to his crib and he will fall back asleep.
If I need to run a quick errand, I try not to take DS. If I have to I keep him strapped in because once he gets out of the stroller it takes a while to get him back in without a tantrum. Which is understandable - he's super active and wants to run around.

LO is only 10 weeks so she's usually pretty content in her carseat in the cart or in her stroller. I bribe her with her paci if I need to

@junebugmama, that's pretty much how I've done it. Recently I've let DS (20 mos) walk next to me in Target and he actually stayed with me! I don't know if it was a fluke or not but now I try to give him a little practice walking with me every time we go to the store. When he was younger like 12-15 mos he wouldn't stay at all, he ran around like crazy!

@glimmersnaps: it took DS a while to get that he had to hold my hand, but after a few tries he now knows he will get strapped right back into the stroller if he doesn't hold my hand in the store while he is walking. Now it's more fun because he doesn't fight me and we walk around together. He loves to watch the elevators go up and down at the one mall since you can see them from the back on the bottom level.

Now that my daughter is big enough to go in the shopping cart, shopping is our favorite activity. DD loves sitting in the shopping cart and looking around at all of the stuff on the shelves. I think she also loves that she looks right at us at almost eye level while we shop. It's even better than the stroller!

I wear DD in the baby carrier and either push DS in the stroller or in the cart. He was actually able to walk and behave in quite a few stores today! But his legs get tired so that's why the stroller is helpful. I don't do too many bribes anymore but today since he was really good, we went out to lunch.

Bribes! I always keep a box of raisins in my purse. Or if we run low, I grab one of those little boxes of goldfish and we share it. Shaking the dried goods will keep her for a bit longer. But I can't do a truly long shopping trip with her. It's a pain, because I'm really not willing to waste my weekend doing one, so they just never happen. So I never get out to the big cheap stores, and I end up spending more on groceries.
