With DS only going to be about 7-8 months around the holidays i'm already dreading going to a million different places to visit. it's our first holidays with him and i want to enjoy them! i come from a divorced family, which makes it so we have a few more stops to make, DHs parents are still together. we are constantly running on the holidays and it's not enjoyable! not everyone is very compromising either. how did/will you split the holidays with all the families? i wish everyone would go to one place, but i know that won't happen.

ugh, my parents are divorced too, feel ya there. Holidays were NOT relaxing. Can you make them come to you? We moved far away from both parents so we dont deal with it now, but before Liv it was constant runing

@LivsMama: i'm guessing it'll be constant running! and i'm not happy about it. DH wants everyone to come to us on christmas(lol!) but i know that won't fly. my mom is VERY open, she just wants to see her grandbabies and doesn't care where it is...it's everyone else i'm worried about. i told DH we may need to cut a couple places out(both of our aunts houses).

Our parents both live close to us, so we are able to get to both houses. Jewish holidays usually take place over a couple of days, so we'll be able to go one night to one house and the next night to the next house. Also we're willing to celebrate a day off, like we'll celebrate Rosh hashanah (Jewish new year) on sat with my family even though it officially hasn't really started yet.
We're lucky for Chanukah because we have 8 days, so we can go to each house, and do things on our own
For Thanksgiving my family does a brunch and his family does the traditional dinner, so that worked out nicely for us too.

We trade off every other year. So we'll do Thanksgiving with his family and Christmas with mine, and then the next year it will be swapped. My older brother and his family does it the same way, so we timed it so we're on the same schedule so we are all at my parents on the same year.

our LO is arriving in October and I think will change the dynamic of what happens over holidays moving forward (since everyone will want to see the babe)... But for now, we trade off Thanksgiving with one side, then Xmas with the other - then we'll switch the following year. Same with Easter.... Last year we were away for thanksgiving, so we did both families for Xmas, but it was A LOT because they are in NH and CT.

This Christmas we will have a 4 week old and our families are a plane ride away so we pretty much told them too bad we're not coming home. My parents and my aunt have decided to come to us for Christmas. It's my brother's year to be at his inlaws so it would have just been the three of them so it worked out perfectly. They've already said they will do all of the cooking and everything, I'll just get to relax : ) My in laws will probably come down at New Year's since they work in the school system and get a longer vacation. So this year turned out to be easy.
Next year when we go home for the first time with baby it will be a disaster. My family is really easy and laid back. But my husband's family is spread out all over the state of Mass. and they all have parties and they are all obsessed with him (I swear he's the golden child). So we will be expected to show up at EVERYTHING. And my husband is basically incapable of saying no to his family. But I'll just play it by ear. I'm not going to exhaust my child for the sake not hurting anyone's feelings. If great aunt what's her name doesn't see the baby it's not the end of the world. : )

We used to do one year with my parents and one year with my ILs, but we haven't been at Christmas with my ILs since 2008 for various logistical reasons including having a 9 day old.

We will have a 6 month old. We told everyone we want to have Christmas with just our family of 3 this year. We will visit my folks on the weekend and do Christmas with them then. I have to work Monday but Tuesday it will just be the three of us. I'm looking forward to it. His parents are too far away and don't really celebrate holidays that much so it's not a huge deal to them.

My in-laws are divorced and live in New York. We can't go anywhere next year because I will have already used up my time on maternity leave. But if DH still has his same job the following year, we have no choice but to stay here and do the holidays with my dad (usually at our house) -- DH covers high school sports for a local newspaper and can't travel over the holidays because there are usually games to cover right after T-giving and Christmas.

Last year I was pregnant and uncomfortable for Thanksgiving and Christmas so we just spent the holidays with my in laws. I think we will alternate major holidays going forward. This year, we plan to spend Thanksgiving with my family and Christmas with the in laws and next year the opposite.

We stay here for Thanksgiving, and my family usually comes to us. Christmas is split and we usually trade off on which side we spend Christmas Day with. Our families live too far apart to see both in one day, but too close to only visit one per holiday.

Thankfully Canada has Thanksgiving in October which makes it easy to split. But Christmas gets difficult because no one lives near us during winter so we've alternated one year with MIL and my parents. The next with FIL and my grandparents. Last year we drove from Toronto to DC for Christmas eve and then DC to Florida for Christmas dinner (up at 3am and on the road). The travel was horrible!
This year I'll be 38 weeks and spending it on my own couch..haha. -
Thanksgiving we go to my parent's house (45 minutes away). Christmas has always been a nightmare because we live in Maine, and all of my husband's family is spread all over southern CA (his parents are divorced). We just laid down the law and told everyone we are hosting Christmas at our house and all are welcome. Of course, that's easier on my parents than his, but I feel like that's just the luck of the draw. His parents will be flying out to our house for Christmas.

we usually host thanksgiving with my family/extended family/his parents (cuz they all live in the same town).
christmas eve we go to service with my parents, then come home to do our christmas time just us. christmas morning we do service and brunch with ILs... then a dinner with my parents/extended family.
christmas weekend we go up north to see dh's extended family.
this year, we'll likely just stay home since LO will only be a month old.

We're going try a trade-off this year. I'm a little skeptical, but we'll see how it goes.
We'll go to my parents' house for Thanksgiving this year, and my in-laws' house for Christmas. This is the only year we'll travel for Christmas, since I really want to do that at our own home. Next year, we'll go to my in-laws' house for Thanksgiving, and my parents will come to our house for Christmas, and then we'll trade each year after that.

this is one of the few benefits of having ILs who don't celebrate holidays.
we're continuing to do what my family always did growing up...my dad and my moms families swapping off holidays. one gets thanksgiving, one gets christmas, and vice versa the next year. however, I already made my point with my parents that if we don't want to go somewhere we aren't.

at some point we are gonna to have to come up with a better plan then what we have now...
currently we split holidays, my family does everything on the earlier side and DH does everything on the later side. so it works for us.
its hard sometimes because we are the only ones on both sides of the familes that has local in-laws.
christmas is my favorite holiday and we run around alot on christmas eve splitting time between the two families. we end up leaving my family when the party is just getting fun (usually around 7-8) and then end up driving to DH parents house and stay there till the wee hours...its fine for now but it wont fly once we have LO's....

We usually host Thanksgiving as well as a non-denominational holiday party in mid-December. Then we go to DHs family 4 hours away for Christmas eve and Christmas day since his family is the only ones who celebrate Christmas (my family is Jewish).
This year will be different, however, since our baby is due the day after Thanksgiving.

We don't "split" the holidays...instead we run around like crazy people trying to be everywhere at once! Ahhh
But with a LO this year I don't know how we're pulling that off. Our Muslim holiday is 2w after my due date so I doubt we will even be leaving the house and at thanksgiving he will only be 7w old so again: maybe not doing much this year...and I'm cool with that! -
My family is right around the corner so we spend all holidays with them except for Thanksgiving. We travel about 7 hrs to spend Thanksgiving with the in-laws. We were actually just talking about this last night (because we hate the food there and are already complaining!) and my husband was saying that once LO is older he wants to just do Thanksgiving here and travel to see his family during the summer and another non-holiday time during the year. I have no complaints!
