DS is almost 8 months so out of the big time spit up phase of a newborn. He spits up everyonce and a while but it's just a dribble. I was just nursing him and he burped and either spewed vomit all over me or spit up. I can't tell which it is and if I should worry.
A little girl in his class just get strep and the first thing she did was throw up then run a fever so I didn't know if I should worry.

i always have heard a mouth full is just spit up. if she spewed (as in projectile) it sounds like vomiting?

I always thought that if it is forced out, then it is vomit. If it falls out of the mouth (like a burp) than it is spit up. DS will still spit up if he only has liquid in his belly and he is 14 months old.

I've read that spit up is a subset of vomit. I think the main difference is volume and whether your LO is happy or experiences discomfort. Last month, when he was 11 months old, LO spit up a big mouthful after drinking a big bottle. He acted like nothing had happened and continued to crawl around to play. I think I had accidentally put some pressure on his tummy when I was putting him on the floor to play. If your LO seems happy and not fussy afterwards, I would tend to think it is spit up rather than vomiting.

vomit smells like death warmed over. spit up smells like milk or mildly sour milk no matter how forcefully it came out.
(my own definition)
ETA if he seems seriously upset by it, i sometimes also count that as vomit

i'm calling vomit on this one...hope we make it through the night without another incident!

I wouldn't worry unless he showed other symptoms. Kids spew bodily fluids for lots of reasons, many of them harmless.
