I'venoticed lately that my just turned four-year-old is drawing people with a lot more detail. Apparently there are developmental stages to drawing people! How does your child draw a picture and how old are they?

That's great! I really love when you see changes in their drawings. I attached a photo of what my daughter drew 2 months before her 4th birthday. It actually hasn't changed much since then, but she will add more details. For instance she recently drew my DH with crutches and a boot.

A circle. Lots of eyes. Two legs often a bit lower then the body. He just turned 3 and has no patience for sitting and drawing..: 🙄

@travellingbee: my 4y 8m (edited to clarify exactly how old- I had to count lol) does similar. I've seen some come home with more detailed noses, hands, feet, but it's possible those were more guided, not sure. I personally think that's pretty good for newly four! When I worked with K students they had to draw themselves monthly and it was fun to see their drawings evolve. I remember they would often start out as floating people and by the end they were full people standing on the ground.

My five year old hated drawing until just a few months ago. I never really saw his developmental stages in art because he refused to draw. Now he likes coloring, drawing, letter writing, etc.
This is his "self portrait" (Yes he does have crazy curly, long hair!).
He will draw stick figure people too.

She drew a person last weekend. The hands were on the side of the head

My oldest will be 4 in July. She drew the first picture in Oct and the second two today....the picture with the flowers is so detailed. She was showing me that the girls is kicking a soccer ball into the net, haha. Cute.

This is when she started kinder (5). She said she is sitting in a chair with the whiteboard behind her. She drew animals pretty well! I have to look for a recent one.

@travellingbee: That's basically exactly how my 4 year old draws a person!

My DS just turned 4 and doesn't really draw people yet... he prefers roads! Lol. It definitely is developmental! And so cool to see these awesome drawings!

My son followed the typical pattern, the first ones were a big circle for the head with the arms and legs coming directly out of it. Now, it's evolved to having a torso, with clothes on. It's been really fun to watch.

H drew me the other day! I look like a potato with a smile and arms coming out of my head, but I will treasure this drawing forever.

All of the art just warms my heart. DD just drew this last night. She said she is the Queen of Nature. (I was corrected that she is NOT Mother Nature.) Notice the veil and the dog themed t-shirt that repeats itself often as you can see in post (drawn one year prior) further above.
Just started first grade and she loves art.
