My toddler (2) is very shy until she feels comfortable in a new setting. I took her to her first gymnastics class last night and she did not participate until the end....then we had trouble getting her to leave the baby rock wall and climbing station.

@Rubies: I was embarrassed but a few moms and dads told me that it took a few classes for their LO to fully participate!

My LO's nervous habit is picking his nose when he gets to new places or when new people come over!

My son is a bit older, but he used to do that as well.
He's on his second soccer lesson and he's a BOSS. He goes right in and high fives the coaches.

@autumnlove: as a gymnast coach what your child did is completely normal. My son is often very flexible but sometimes throws is for a loop. Then again last night he went to a new sitters with absolutely no issues.

A is very cautious around new ppl and in new settings. He likes observing first. There were a bunch of new kiddos and parents in our gymboree class (plus we hadn't been in a few weeks due to travel/holidays/sickness) and it took him half the class to get more into it with the other babies!

Very cautious and serious. It takes her forever to warm up, even with friends that she sees multiple times per week! It is totally not her personality with DH and I.

Depends on the situation, swim lessons he went nuts bc he loves being in the water, in a gymnastic/play gym setting he CLINGS to me. Until we have to leave.

My DS is pretty open to new situations but my DD is very shy. It took several ballet classes for her to get comfortable. Thankfully we made it through her new Chinese school this weekend without any issue (but she is 5 now).

C is very shy. It takes him a good 45 minutes to an hour before he is ready to truly venture away from me or DH and participate.

Up until about 2 weeks ago, he would rush in to join anything and always wanted to be a part of what was going on. But we're going through a serious "I'm terrified of everyone and everything" phase, and it's driving me nuts. He's cried more times in the past 2 weeks than in the past year. Hopefully he'll come out of it soon cause I miss my happy, social man.

M is shy but not really clingy. She just likes to sit back and watch things for a bit.
