It totally depends on your kid - I know my nephew walks 100 feet and needs to rest - my DS who is 6 walked 2 miles with my mom without saying he was tired.

I would think a mile would be doable but again, depends on your child.

And yes, 3 is fine for a backpack carrier - my 4yr old still likes to get in it while DH cuts the grass

I agree that it depends on the kid. My 19 month old happily hikes 2+ miles (although keeping her moving in the right direction can be a challenge). We recently went hiking with a friend who has a large 3 year old (40 lb) and they borrowed our hiking backpack with no problem.

totally depends on the kid. we lived in the country so i easily walked miles, but my kids could never do that! and 3 is def not too old for one of those backpack carriers!

We've been hiking with a group for about a mile and a half since 18 months. LO is 2 now and sometimes I still have to pick her up to keep up with the group but she's mostly happy to walk the whole time. She was never ok being in a carrier while other kids were walking.

My LO is 2 and regularly does a mile. He is worn out at the end, but he is also running in circles the whole time!

We put him in the backpack for longer hikes. They are usually rated to about 45lbs. Our main issue with it is that he wants to get out. So 3-4 miles is what we typically so, although we will probably push it to 5-6 when it warms up and we can get earlier starts.

I think it just depends on how focused/willing to sit your kid is!
