I'm making sugar cookies for my LO's bday party next month, and I'm trying to get as much stuff done as early as possible. When do you think is the earliest I could make and decorate sugar cookies? Has anyone made them a couple weeks in advance?

Are you doing rolled and cut sugar cookies with frosting? My friends and I make these cookies each year: http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/The-Best-Rolled-Sugar-Cookies/
And frost them with Royal Icing -- they are typically good for at least a week, if not longer. -
If they're frosted, I'd make them early, freeze them, then ice them close to the party

You can toss cookie dough in the freezer for quite a while!

I freeze sugar cookies (unfrosted) a month before Christmas and they taste great. I put in a freezer Ziploc and then in a tight lid container to make sure of freshness, taste just as good when they come out. Freezing them frosted doesn't taste that great.

Just bake the cookies ahead, freeze and frost closer to the party.

I agree with others. I'm a pastry chef and wouldn't freeze them after you frost them but before is fine. For my bakery I make the cookie dough, pre- scoop it and freeze the balls. Then just bake straight from the freezer, no need to thaw just add a min or two to the baking time. Then you have fresh baked cookies!! Or baking ahead of time and freezing works well too!

@buttermilk: Thanks! How long do you think baked cookies will keep in the freezer (if they are kept airtight)? Also, I'm going to be making cookies on a stick... not sure if that changes anything?
