If you or your SO were offered a position in a place with a ton of history and culture for a year, but happen to have really bad air pollution, would you take it?
How important is air quality to you? If you could wait until your LO(s) are older, at what age would you actually consider it?

I've lived in Bangkok, Thailand and a large city in Africa. Both had terrible air quality and I had a hard time with asthma while I was in each place, but it was so worth it for me as a single individual. With babies, I have to assume that the calculus is different... but I'm not so sure that I'd let those considerations sway me from the opportunity. If my kids had asthma then maybe it would change things.

@Mrs. Jacks: would it be possible for an infant to get asthma because of the air pollution? That's one of the things we're afraid of.

I would imagine that you wouldn't spend as much time outdoors in a city like that so I would still take the opportunity and go.
My company sometimes has opportunities to work in China and I would do it even though the air is terrible there.
What city are you considering?

I would certainly consider it, and buy a high quality air purifier for my home. After all, you and your baby spend most of your time in the house.

I'm meh... I guess it depends how strongly it smells. If I can't smell anything it tends to be an "ignorance is bliss" situation.
However I cannot STAND constant cigarette smoke. Makes me sick.

Beijing. I honestly didn't think it was that bad, but according to this article only a handful of cities have worse air pollution!

We've actually already turned it down, LO's so small, we don't plan on going anywhere for awhile. It is tempting though, but we just didn't want to risk it. Maybe when she's older and if the pollution gets better.

I was going to say that it depends where you would be going and how bad the pollution really is, but I've been to Beijing and I would not live there. Both DH and I got really "sick"- runny noses, coughing in the street, when we were there on vacation. As soon as we got out to nature it almost instantly cleared up.
