My husband had 4% normal morphology and we got pg through IVF with ICSI...so I do think it has an effect, but it only takes one good one! We had one chemical pg prior to starting treatments.

@April_Showers: My RE seconded what your doctor said, about low morphology making ivf the best option.

However I will add that I know 2 women who's husbands cut alcohol and started taking Fertilaid and saw a DRASTIC difference. My doctor also told me the sample he gives became ready 6 weeks prior, so if he was sick, partying, etc, they will reflect that. Overall it takes about 3mo for new sperm to develop and mature, so if you make life changes or start him on a supplement, expect it to take a little time.

Our MFI is morphology and I'm still trying to understand it all. I had a miscarriage a few years ago, so it is possible but there's no telling how long it will take.

My husband TTC'd for two years with his ex including 4 IUI's and 1 IVF, all of which were unsucessful.

@MrsTal: no he didn't, he didn't want to pay for it and the RE seemed to think it would be ok without it. They came out if it with two embryos good enough to transfer.

@MrsTal: If all the other numbers were "off" it really may be a fluke. It takes at least 70-90 days for sperm to mature, so if he had something 3 months back (like a sickness or prescription, etc.) it could definitely affect it. We've been through a whole crazy lot of stuff in terms of acupuncture, herbs, supplements, prescriptions to help with Dh's low testosterone, etc without a BFP. But even with his worst numbers, especially because of my age, we would have had a really good shot at IVF w/ICSI working. I don't even want to think about how much we spent in the meantime to AVOID IVF, when it may have just been cheaper and easier to go that route instead.
Of course I'm totally grateful for the route we DID chose (adoption) and we have had such a great experience with Little P that we're adopting again. But, if you guys are open to IVF w/ICSI and feel like you might need it for female issues as well it might be easier in the long run if you go that route vs. trying to get to "the bottom" of the sperm thing like we did. They really can bypass even really awful MF issues that way. I know someone who has gotten TWO BFPs and her DH literally had about a dozen sperm with 0% morphology! So, it's definitely possible.

And DH's counts have always been great (sometimes as high as 400 million!), motility has been a mixed bag, sometimes great and sometimes on the low side, but it's the morphology that has always been awful. Blergh. Infertility is so stinky!

My husband has low morphology. There is also a female factor we are dealing with. Going to try supplements for my husband. Can't hurt!

@MrsMcD: it would have been two years next month, so 22 months.

My DH doesn't have morphology issues, but he still takes Fertility Blend for Men, especially while we are going through treatment. I have noticed that all of his numbers increase during the months he is taking it religiously! During our last IUI he didn't take anything and his numbers were fine but not as good as we have seen them. He just had another SA before we start IVF and has been taking Fertility Blend again and his numbers were much much better.

@sapphire: your remarks are very encouraging! I like that your doctor doesn't think you need to go straight to IVF.

@MrsTal: I'd like to have DH try sine supplements as well. I'm hoping my obgyn will suggest something. Do you know how long you want to keep trying without intervention? I'd like to try forever without intervention but I worry about my age. Also, IVF is such a big step financially and otherwise.

@MrsTal: your plan sounds perfect. A clinical trial was done on pcnogenol and it's affect on morphology and it had great results. However, it didn't work for DH. He also did a crazy ton of supplements all related to male fertility and his counts and motility improved A LOT, but never that stubborn morphology.
We did talk with a urologist, and found DH had low testosterone and microscopic varicoceles. But, with morphology being the only issue he didn't recommend the surgery and said there was nothing they could do about low testosterone.
But one year ago we started at a new RE and he has been working with DHs hormones and his testosterone is in normal ranges again. And again, his counts and motility are great, but morphology is still at 1%. SO, all that to say, there's definitely a LONG road you could potentially take to "get to the bottom of the problem" , but in our case, it still never helped morphology. But I think we've finally gotten to the place where were done trying various things because the most annoying thing about male fertility issues is that you have to wait 3 months each time to see if it makes a difference! Ugh!
I think trying for several months with supplements, etc. is a great idea. I just don't know how much I would recommend our "getting to the root of the problem" strategy because it's been so long and drawn out.

@MrsTal: I like your plan of trying supplements and whatnot for three months to try to fix any sperm issues.

@Mrs. Pinata: Ugh... so sorry you are having such a tough time with morphology also.
