LO is 14 weeks and we haven't received his birth registration card to send in for his birth certificate. I called the hospital and they just told me sometimes it can take a long time. So then I called the Division of Vital Records and no one answered. 
How long did you have to wait for yours?

We had to drive to London to go to the US Embassy to apply for C's Certificate of Birth Abroad. We went July 6th and got it July 26th, along with her passport. We got it just before she turned 4 months.

All that was filled out at the hospital and they took care of it. We received it just before she turned a month.

Even though we filled out the info at the hospital they gave us a form to take home with us and we had to mail that in with $20 and then within a few days her birth certificate arrived

i'm not sure the exact timeline, but it was fast for both kids. i think definitely under a month.

I filled out all the paperwork at the hospital to have a birth certificate issued but in Ohio you aren't automatically sent a copy of the birth certificate. I had to go to the county's vital statistics office about 6 weeks after her birth and pay for a copy.

we never got anything. I am finally getting around to requesting it (a year later) because we need it to fly next month. I have to pay $15 per copy.

In England, you go to register the birth of the baby after the birth. So you have 6 weeks (I think) to settle on a name and go meet with a registrar who takes care of the birth certificate. If you don't get it done within 6 weeks, it's illegal.
Interesting side-note: The regular birth certificate is free, but if you want the full one (which you need to get a passport) it's 10 pounds.

@duckduckkristen: did you fill out and send in the paperwork with your payment? I actually just went to the register of deeds because we are flying soon and I wanted a copy. I wasn't sure how long it would take to get it mailed to us.

the hospital took and sent out all of the information for us, and we were able to get an official birth certificate 6 weeks later for 10$ at our health department.

I think it took about a month for ours to arrive after I sent the request in.

DS is 4.5 months old and I still don't have a copy. It's there, we just have to fill out the paper and pay the fee to get a certified copy.

The Swiss birth certificate came in the mail because we registered the birth while still in the hospital. We couldn't start the American birth abroad cert process until we had that, but in all, it took us a visit to the Consulate and some paperwork and we had it in less than 6 weeks.

@zippylef: We waited until my parents came to visit so they could be part of the official naming, so Linus was about 3 weeks. It was surprisingly easy!

It was all filled out and sent in by the hospital right away but we had to pay $22 and get it from the registrars office.

The hospital gave us the form, I filled them out wrong and they sent them back, then I sent them again, and we had it when he was 4-5 weeks old. Definitely before 6 weeks (because we were going to Canada at 7 weeks and if we didn't have it at 6 weeks I would have flipped).
We live in Virginia.
