Without a kid, about two to three weeks. We were slow & closed before our lease was up so we moved small boxes over in our car before we did the BIG move.

I packed all of our "never use" items first then did things like our dishes last.

Since I did the majority of the packing I started way early at like 2-3 months out. I packed up stuff we didn't use often. But I have packed up and moved a house completely in as little as 2 weeks without feeling tooooo crazy.

It took me about a week to pack solo (while DH traveled). I only have 1 kid at the time though!

We've never lived in more than 550 square feet. We could probably pack in a day lol

We moved when LO was about 6 months and like you guys, had only night after she had gone to bed and weekends to pack. We closed 30 days after offer acceptance and I definitely used that entire month. I was still packing as the movers loaded up the truck, and was collecting crap out of our condo for several weeks after we moved out. GOOD LUCK

Last move was pre-kids, so about a week. Now we are getting ready to move again and I'm going to start about 2 months out- but that's because I'm on my own with the packing, and I also need to sell almost everything.

Our apt lease was up in early February and we started to look for other options. We went house looking for 2 weeks. We needed to be approved for the house 20 days before our lease was up so we could give enough notice. The one house we wanted and got approved for... At the very last minute (25 days before pur lease end), the owners decided they didn't want pet owners. We then thought it was too late to find a house and thought we would stay at our apt. We were bummed. But, I kept looking for houses and found a house 2 minutes from our apartment. In the same development. They were having an open house the next day. We really wanted this house so we made sure we were the first couple to see it. Well, the owner picked us!!! 23 days before our lease was up!! So then we started packing. We had both places for about 2 weeks, so we were able to get some stuff over. But overall we had 3 weeks to get everything out. I don't ever want to move again. If I do, I hope it's for a relocation and they pay for packers and movers.

A whole month!

Our last real move took about two weeks - we needed to pack a bunch of stuff into storage, so it was deciding what to keep and what to put away.
When we moved from my parents' into our house, it took no time to pack (stuff in storage) but took FOREVER to unpack.

@mrs. wagon: exciting!!!! Are you moving further into the burbs or staying close to the city?!;)

It took us a couple weeks I would say - one weekend we had my mother in law watch our LO so we could dedicate one entire day to packing which was huge - we got a TON don in that one day!

Three weeks, but I mainly do the packing. My husband just throws things in boxes and doesn't label them.

@mrs. wagon: i think someone definitely has to be there to oversee the packers (sign off when they finish, watch for damage to property, etc). but you can totally have them pack thursday, and then move you saturday. Just clearly label things you dont want packed or designate a " do not pack corner" for stuff you will need for friday and Saturday (and the next few days in the new house), a bag for the kids, a locked suitcase with valuables, important documents, etc. Because otherwise if they see it, they will pack it. They are efficient machines -they aren't paid to think, "would they want this packed?" They packed empty small boxes, used dishcloths in my kitchen. Literally everything.

Just for reference, the SoCal rate for a three person crew was $136 an hour, plus $100 for materials. The total was around $700, but so worth it to maintain my sanity. But get multiple quotes, see if your employer gets corporate discounts and most good companies will match competitor discounts.

Edit: I was choosing between two companies, one of which offered 10% off through my husband's employer plus an additional discount, but I thought the other company had a better reputation. when I asked, the other company matched both discounts.

@mrs. wagon: with all the bags you're throwing away, it'll probably take you 15minutes tops! Hehe jk, I think you'll be fine with 2 weeks although I bet ya a day before you might have to take the day off work, send the kids to daycare and pull an all day event to wrap things up, because there are always those things that are miscellaneous and last minute.
Congrats on the move!!

2 weeks. My husband was unavailable to help because he was taking his last surgery board exam and T was then 13 months old. I packed during his naps and he went to daycare a few times so I could pack all day. It was a little complicated because half our stuff was going in one truck to storage and the other to our new destination so everything had to be separated and labeled really well.

3 weeks! We had a month to find a house a move once ours sold. Very short closing. It ended up working out.

We did it in one long weekend LOL. Four days of doing nothing but packing and moving, basically. It helped that the new house is five minutes from the old house. But with two fulltime jobs, four dogs, a toddler, and showing our house daily to sell it, we just couldnt pack ahead of time!!!
