I leave it in there for 24 hours. And then I'll make roasted rice with it. YUMMMM.

one day max! in our wolfgang puck rice maker.
but in an asian rice cooker, i've kept it for days on "keep warm"

Usually up to 2 days on warm. It starts getting yellow and crunchy if it stays in there longer. If I catch it on the second day, I'll pull out the rice and put in in a bowl or ziplock to make fried rice. Yum, I love fried rice.
Thanks for the reminder. I need to have the DH turn off the rice cooker.

@mediagirl: Oops, I said "roasted" earlier but I meant "toasted!" So you basically take the leftover rice and spread it on a frying pan as a really thin layer (no oil). On low. And you basically toast it on both sides. And you end up with crispy toasted rice. You can eat it like that or better yet, you can boil some hot water, put a few pieces in the pot and boil it for a good 15 or so mins. And you end up with super yummy toasted rice porridge!
I found a random website with step by step instructions.

@banana: Ah, my mom would hit the Start button again to make crispy rice. I haven't done it in my rice cooker yet because I don't know if it will end up the same. I could try your method.
ETA: Oh, I never had the porridge before. I should try that tonight.

Just for dinner and I'll put it away in the fridge overnight. My in-law's will leave it in the rice cooker on warm for days until it turns yellow.

@bluestriped bee: You can make that in a rice cooker?? I've never tried that! I only know the pan method.
hostess / wonderful apple seed / 16729 posts
@banana: Well, it's just rice that's extra toasty and crispy on the bottom. Not both sides like your method.

@bluestriped bee: Oh I see! I'll try that next time and see how it turns out. I like toasting on both sides because you can keep it for a long time. I think I've kept toasted rice in a ziploc bag for 3 weeks and it was still fresh.

Woah. I didn't know you could keep it in there that long!! I always just put my leftovers from that meal in a container and stick it in the fridge right away!

I never leave it on or in there past dinner time.
I always forget my rice cooker has a porridge option!!!

I turn it off as soon as the rice is cooked. I never leave it on the warm option.

I've never thought to leave it on warm for days. That kinda freaks me out. Like it might start a fire or something. I unplug it once we are done eating and stick leftovers in the fridge.

We have a super ghetto rice cooker that doesn't have a warming option. So we just cook it, eat once the button pops, and then store in the fridge overnight in a tupperware. I'd love to get a nice new rice cooker... I'm just waiting for our old one to die.

I don't have a rice cooker (would like one but I can't justify yet another kitchen appliance!), but rice is one of the only foods that gives me food safety paranoia. Because it's so starchy, it's a super breeding ground for bacteria. Unless the "keep warm" function keeps the rice really, really hot, I would personally never trust it...I have a hard time bringing myself to eat rice that's been in the fridge more than two days.

For days, although we usually finish what's left by the second day.
@PurplePeony: My Zojirushi keeps it pretty hot!
