For me, it takes a few wears for them to loosen up and be comfortable - if they are high quality, they'll just keep getting more comfortable with time.

I've never really had to break in boots. My last few pairs have been a little stiff for a few days, but softened up quickly without giving me blisters or discomfort.

As a rule I don't buy shoes that feel stiff or like they need to be broken in.

I just bought my first pair of nice leather boots. I wore them for the first time yesterday to work and they were definitely stiff. I'm wearing them again today and I can tell they aren't as stiff. I can imagine it will take a few more wears for them to really relax like they will be for the rest of the time I wear them.
