We did a private US adoption, and it was about 6 months from our first class at the agency to bringing our son home!

We're interested in a waiting child so we're hoping not to "wait" for a referral but to just request to get places directly with him.

@hotchildinthecity: mind if I ask how that works? How do you know if they're a "waiting child", or even how to go about finding those that are waiting children?
IF we adopt in the future, it would be older children (age 4+) which would decrease our wait time - and I wonder if that means they are "waiting children".

@Mrs. Pen: we found the little one we're interested in through rainbowkids.com which is a photolisting database. I believe many of the children are special needs. Adoptuskids also has photolistings for us waiting children.
We hope having a child in mind will eliminate that referral wait time, but the rest of the process will be standard to how long everyone else waits.
