I'm just wondering if I have enough/too many newborn diapers for baby girl's arrival. I have a box of 96 from BRU, and two of the smaller packs from my shower, which I think have around 30 diapers each.
How many diapers did you go through per day when your lo was a newborn? How long did your lo stay in newborn diapers? How many do you think I'll need?

It was every 2 hours, so about 12 diapers in one day!

Newborns generally eat every two to three hours and eliminate everytime they eat, so between 8 and 12 a day for the first little while. Emma was a skinny little thing but she only made it through 120 NB diapers before having to transition to size 1's!

We changed LO's diapers every time he ate so about 8 times a day. My LO was born early so we started with preemie diapers. He was in preemie diapers for a few weeks and newborn for 2 months. But he was a little guy. My best friends LO was only in newborn diapers a week or so.

LO went through a box of 88, some randoms from the hospital & 2 packs of 36 before moving to size 1s. I'm fairly sure he was in NB for 6 weeks? maybe?
BUT - he's always just been a once-a-day (if lucky) pooper, so.

The first two weeks it was like 10-12 diapers a day. Then it slowed down to like 8/9. now at 7 weeks, he goes through maybe 7/8 a day.

LO skipped newborn diapers and went right to size 1 (in the hospital). Don't open packages of diapers until you need them.
You can always exchange unopened packages of diapers.

So, I figure the box will last us about 10 days, and then we can start on the stolen hospital diaps and smaller packs. I'll keep those small packs unopened just in case she's a chunker and doesn't get to those.

@allison: it's supposed to be more for cloth dipes because they can feel the wetness sooner.

We went through at least a jumbo box no problem. If you are unsure of LO's size or how long LO will stay in them, don't open your BRU box and use the smaller packs. If you want to bump up to size 1, then you can exchange the boxes at BRU. I've done this myself, especially since we came home with a ton of newborn diapers from the hospital.

i'm not sure how many we used - but just a warning, our son didn't fit into the newborn diapers so we very quickly went into size 1 --- I had opened a bunch of boxes of Newborns & couldn't return them - so just keep them closed!

I read a rule of thumb is to get 100 newborn diapers and 500 size 1s... does that sound about right?

@ladyfingers: 100 newborn diapers would be just over a week @ a dozen a day, plus add a few days of ins bought diaps in the hospital, so that would be 2 weeks worth of diapers max. i think it depends on your baby & how fast the grow & how often they're pooping (something about a clean diaper seems to bring on another poop, it's fascinating! haha) but i think many babies are in nb at least that long, but you'd prob be feeling well enough to make it out of the house to grab more by then or to spend someone out for more. some babies skip them all together, so who knows!

10ish a day when she was a NB, and she was in NB diapers for 6 weeks (she's a wee little thing).

we used NB for 3 weeks, about 210 (a case worth).
size 1 until 8 weeks - we used around 300? give or take.
both newborn and currently, we use about 6-10 diapers a day depending! that includes a 24 hour period because I'm looking on the babyconnect app, haha.
we started size 2 at about 8 weeks, she's 11 weeks thursday and we're still on the first box I opened (the biggest size you can get).

honestly, next time I'm skipping NB entirely. they give you size 1 at our hospital and I just had to overlap the tapes, but they fit!

@ladyfingers: it depends on the size of the baby, which is so not helpful. my baby was born 7 lb 10 oz, and at her 1 month check was 9 lbs. she was out of newborn by 3 weeks old. she's short and chunky.
she was also out of size ones at around 11 lbs (she was 12 lbs at her 2 month check and was already out of the size 1s). next time I'm skipping NB, and just using 1s to start!

We went through about 10-12 a day because she was pooping a lot when she was that little. We had a few randoms from the hospital and maybe 2 packs already (everyone said not to buy too many), but ended up needing to buy maybe 3 more packs. I think around 5-6 weeks she moved up to size one.
