Just one old dog, and we live in an apartment. I think we will pretty much always have one dog, no more, even when we have a house.
Our dog is pretty old, so if or when he passes on (hopefully not for a few years!) we will wait until the kids are old enough to beg for a dog.

@Ash: lol, I am the same way! DH is holding firm on the 2 dog max though. I think he would consider an outdoor cat..

We have two (60 lb+) dogs and two cats. With a pretty good sized backyard. We also have six chickens but I didn't count them.

I always grew up with one pet at a time (the 2 we had growing up were both dogs). After moving out and getting married, we had a dog and a cat at the same time. Since our cat died, we've just had the dog. I don't know that I would go back to 2 animals and I don't see myself ever having 2 of the same species.
