We use the dishwasher, but it still seems like it's taking too many hours out of the day.
How many hours a day do you spend washing dishes?

Physically about 45 min-1 hour. The dishwasher works an hour or two a day.

We use the dishwasher about twice or three times a week. Every day I spend about 20 mins washing dishes, bottles, and pump parts. Twice or three times a week we spend about 15 mins emptying the dishwasher.

None! DH doesn't believe in dishwashers (we have one, never been used) and doesn't like the way I wash dishes. Fine by me!
He's washed all the dishes since we first moved in together.

Maybe 5 mins? I give everything a quick rinse then put it right in the dishwasher. I never have anything in the sink, things get used, then rinsed then right in the DW.

None :-D. I cook, so DH does the dishes. He probably spends about 15 minutes or so washing whatever pan and or pots I used to make dinner and put dishes in the dishwasher.

@mrs. wagon: What's your secret? We do over an hour of dishwashing by hand a day, and run the dishwasher 2-3 times a day.
pomegranate / 3204 posts
We probably spend 30 minutes- 45 washing dishes and run the dishwasher every night.
eggplant / 11824 posts
I don't generally spend any time doing dishes because my husband does them; but it takes either of us no more than 1/2 an hour each night to clean up all the dishes and wipe down the counters, load the dishwasher and turn it on. We run the dishwasher every day.

@mrbee: Woah, how does that work? What do you have to wash so often? I spend 5-10 minutes, depending on if I've done a big round of cooking and need to hand wash pots.
blogger / watermelon / 14218 posts
@mrbee: My secret? I don't cook every day. We use a lot of paper plates (and re-use them... for instance, cut up apples on one, then rinse it off to warm something up in the microwave.) And when I do cook, it's usually one or two pot cooking at the most. When I'm home all day and I'm cooking more than once a day, I wash as I go. But that sure sounds like a lot of dishwashing...!!!

At least 1 I think. We're in a rental house that doesn't have a dishwasher. That is the absolute worst thing about the house. We're looking to buy in a year or so, and DH and I both can't wait until we are back in a house with a dishwasher again!

@sarac: We've been making everything from scratch lately, so I guess that's a lot of pots and pans and dishes? (And by we, I mean Mrs. Bee!)
@mrs. wagon: Thanks for the tips!
blogger / watermelon / 14218 posts
@mrbee: I wish I could offer more helpful tips but I'm pretty much the opposite of you guys as a cook...!!! I make almost nothing from scratch. But maybe paper plates can help at least a little bit?? Maybe with food prep. It's nice to not wash cutting boards that often if you use paper plates instead (and rinse with water between foods... not raw meats obviously). I hate washing cutting boards!

@mrs. wagon: I think it's the from scratch part that's a lot of washing! I'll try out your tips though!!
wonderful grape / 20453 posts
Hours?! Maybe....half an hour? And I cook from scratch, too.

@blackbird: Maybe we're doing it wrong!!!
How big is your family, and how many meals do you guys eat at home?
pomegranate / 3716 posts
@mrbee: Wow, that sounds like a lot!! Of course we are currently still a family of 2...
We usually wash dishes while we cook, which saves time. And then spend about 15 minutes doing dishes after the meal. DH will usually wash the dishes while I wipe down surfaces, put away leftovers and tidy up. Team effort!

I spend 30 minutes - 1 hour on dishes every night. Sometimes DH will help out ^_^

I probably spend 2 hours a day washing dishes (if not more). I cook everyday, and the sink gets full pretty fast. I would love for DH to help more, but it's a battle. It's much easier just to do it myself. We don't have a dishwasher & prefer to hand wash.

I just throw them all in the dishwasher unless it's a non-stick pan, then I wash that by hand and it takes 2 minutes. So maybe 2 minutes? lol
pomelo / 5093 posts
@mrbee: Oh, I see. And you both work from home, right? I can see how that would build up. Are you a clean-as-you-go type? I am, and that makes it feel a ton easier. I probably spend more time than I think doing dishes, but at two or three minutes here and there it rarely feels like much.
coconut / 8430 posts
@mrbee: wow that's a lot of dishes! We run the dishwasher 2-3x a week and spend 20 min hand washing pots and pans and pump parts and bottles. We are 2 adults and one baby who mostly BFs.
pomelo / 5791 posts
As of right now - none. I literally haven't washed a dish in several years, DH does them.
Ask me again when LO is here in a few weeks. I'm sure I will be doing all the dishes then.

We spend around 10 mins. We cook from scratch half the time. Here are our dishwasher secrets-every morning unload... sort in stacks as you unload first, then put away. Soak dishes in half of sink all day. Use small saucer size plates and same cup as much as possible. They fit in top rack. Slice, prep food for the day all one time. Load dishwasher at night. If there is a large pot, wash it so it doesn't take much space. Those are my best secrets.

Hmm... I think between my husband and I, we spend an hour doing dishes every day. (It was even more when I was pumping-- I'd only pump once or twice a day, and still would spend 20 minutes daily just on washing pump parts and bottles by hand.)
The dishes have become so awful since having a kid. I don't understand why people complain about the laundry with babies and kids, because in terms of time spent doing chores, the time we spend doing dishes daily has changed the most and has become just such a pain since having a kid. But the time we spend doing laundry has barely changed at all.

@mr. bee, there are 2 of us and we eat most meals at home (you know, besides lunch, because we eat that at work)! I cook large portions, so I easily cook 4 servings at once so we have lunch. If I make something 'big' on the weekends, there are more pans, depending on how fancy I get.
A lot of the stuff I cook is in one pan, maybe two pans. I roast or steam veggies (and the steamer rinses out easily) and cook chicken in one pan. Aside from the extra dinner dishes (which go in the dishwasher), I don't see how I'd use extra pots and pans to cook more food. There'd be extra plates+utensils+cups.

10min max and that is to wash my pump parts; dishes are DH's chore and we are trying really hard not to do each other's chores (mainly because I end up doing his but don't get the favor returned and get angry)

Between DH and I we spend about 30-45 minutes a day on dishes between emptying the dishwasher, washing pots, putting things away etc.
coconut / 8681 posts
@blackbird: It sounds like we have the same system!
I also cook basically everything from scratch and spend at the most half an hour doing dishes every day. And I run the dishwasher once a day on average.

@lawbee11: Nice!
Less than an hour and if there's a lot of dishes, we put it in the dishwasher.
blogger / pomegranate / 3201 posts
@mrbee: That is a lot!! I suspect it is because you guys are cooking a lot from scratch (and maybe using a lot of different cooking utensils/pots and pans?)
