We no longer have a washer dryer in our apartment, so now we use the machines in our building's basement. It runs on quarters though, so we have a constant need for rolls of quarters.
I kind of feel bad asking for like $100 of quarters though, so I've been going into the bank every day this week and asking for $20 or $40 of quarters. They haven't flinched so maybe I'll just ask for $100 next time?
How many quarters can you ask for at the bank without being rude?

We usually ask for $20, but if we go on a Saturday, we have to go early, or they run out!

They have them in rolls so I don't see anything wrong with asking for $100 worth, it would only be 10 rolls!!

Buy ALL the quarters!! We would do the same thing, buy $100 worth at a time and keep them in a jar with our laundry stuff. Then DH would pilfer the laundry money for coffee.... it was a problem! lol!

I don't think asking for $200 worth of quarters is rude at all. Since they come in rolls it's easy to count (if they had to give them to you individually this may be a different story lol), so I wouldn't think twice about asking for as many as you want to carry.
I always feel shy about asking for a lot of dollar bills... Then I think they wonder what you're going to be up to later lol.

I am also wondering if they just come in rolls? If so, that doesn't seem like a big hassle for them.

I would ask the bank "if I needed to get $100 in quarters at once, is that an issue or easy for you guys? We have to use them for laundry." Then again I have a great relationship with my bank and that wouldn't be weird. If you don't, you could always say "I'd like to get $100 in quarters, is that feasible?"

I used to be a bank teller and wouldn't have thought anything about someone asking for $100 in quarters. Businesses come in and ask for much more change than that- at any given time I'd have several hundred in quarters in my drawer and they had thousands worth in the vault.

I used to work in a bank and it is not strange at all. Ask for however much you want. If it is a problem they will tell you. Sometimes when people wanted lots of change they would have to wait a few minutes as you don't always have immediate access to it.

As many as you want. They are rolls. Super easy to deal with. It shouldn't be a problem. Also- living in NY, I'm sure that's common.

Yea as many as you want. The bank is THE place to exchange currency. It's not like you're going to target and asking them for quarters lol. If they don't have enough they'll tell you, but it isn't an annoying request I don't think.

I used to be a bank teller in college, and I never cared what quantity anyone wanted in any currency - we always had plenty in the vault! Lots of businesses asked for wayyyyy more than $100 in quarters. No worries!

DH routinely requests $40-60 of quarters to stockpile for laundry. They've never said anything about it.

Just to loop back: I asked for $300 today (and Bee just mentioned to me that she asked for $200 in change a while ago), and the bank tellers were clearly very put out both times. The teller today asked me in a very annoyed tone, "Are you a business owner?"
Lesson learned: I'll limit requests at my bank branch to $100 at a time.

@mrbee: I guess I don't understand why you would limit it just because they appeared "put out." It's their job, you're a customer-- it's not like it's food that they can spit in, and they can't shortchange you or anything like that.
Unless there is a written policy, I'd continue to ask for what you need. And if there was a ridiculous policy, I'd probably consider taking my banking business elsewhere...

@HabesBabe: It's not a huge deal to me... the bank is on my way to/from the kids' school, so I can just get quarters a little bit more often.
If there was another bank branch nearby, then I would definitely switch banks! We already have our business accounts at another bank, but their branch is pretty far away...

@mrbee: hmm, I feel like that's his job though! Maybe it would be rude if you asked him to count out $1000 in one dollar bills, at lunch time, if he had to do it manually.

Reminds me of this weekend when I bought a bunch of corn beef because they were on sale and was planning on freezing and giving them to my relatives... the cashier looked at me and said ... wow that's a lot of corn beef and looked very judgmental... I just looked at her... and said yeah it is.

@mrbee: So he's basically complaining because he has to get off his butt and get more change? Boo hoo. It's his job. I would make it a point to go there and get large amounts to quarters, just to annoy him! And, if I'm feeling particularly fiesty, complain to a manager about his attitude, if it continues. LOL.

I don't like to go to managers if it's not a huge issue to me... plus it's not like the other tellers there are much better. I bank at Citibank, and their tellers at my local branch always look unhappy.

One last update, in case anyone stumbles upon this from Google: today I asked for $300 in quarters from my local Citibank, and this time the teller outright refused. She offered me $100, and said that only business accounts could ask for more than that.
I told her that I had gotten $300 plenty of times in the past from the other windows, and offered to try another teller. She was extremely irritated, but agreed to give me the $300 in change. She didn't have to go to the vault to get it though; it was right there under her desk, in a box.
The moral of the story is: as far as I can tell, there doesn't appear to be a hard policy at Citibank against giving lots of quarters. They just don't like to do it.
Also, don't bank at Citibank.

@mrbee: I ran into a similar issue at our bank and the teller basically admitted that they have no policy that prohibits this but "they prefer not to do it". I may have mentioned that I pay enough bank fees every month that unless she could show me a written policy I was going to file a complaint with the corporate office, magically I was allowed to have what I was asking for!

For work I go to the bank to get change all the time for our cash registers. I usually ask for $100 at a time...sometimes $200 and they don't even care! It's easy for them to just grab the rolls and hand them over.
ETA: just read the rest of the thread. We're a business so it's different but I don't see why not. $300 is $300. I don't see why they wouldn't let you. That's ridiculous

@mrbee: I'm sorry she was so rude to you! I've decided it's just the way of bank tellers though & not to take it personally. Yesterday I went to a bank to cash a check & was humiliated because I didn't have an account with them (I bank elsewhere), but that's where the check was written from, I just wanted to cash it & had multiple forms of ID. She refused until she spoke with the person who wrote the check & acted all put out over having to give me cash, it was $1,500, not a crazy amount, I regularly deposit such checks into my bank account without issue, but am living on cash as of late & apparently asking for funds from a bank is just not something bank tellers take kindly to, which is odd since that's a large part of their job

I was a teller throughout college and as long as we had it on hand I had no problem giving quarters. The problem comes in when people want like $1000 in ones
