Do you find that during the day your LO wears sleepers (like footed long sleeved onesies) or do you tend to dress him/her in shirt/pant combos? We have a lot more sleepers than "outfits" and I'm trying to figure out if the sleepers are more like baby pajamas or if they end up wearing them all day.

Im planning on dressing little one in sleepers the majority of the time. Since I'm due in late Nov it will be cold and we will be hanging around the house most of the time.

LO not here yet but I plan on him wearing sleepers basically exclusively for the first 9 weeks, I'd say. It's just easier and I don't see us going out a whole lot in that time. I wouldn't might taking them out in a sleeper at all though.
They are warm and they are comfy and they are easy in/out for diaper changes.
Now that I look, I have *only* outfits from basically 9m+. -
I only dress the baby in outfits for outings. My little girl is a 6 weeks now and we have 4 NB "outfits" that she wears and otherwise she is in onesies around the house. Since she was a summer baby (In Southern CA where it is pretty hot) she has only slept in a full sleeper once, it was just too hot for that and to be swaddled. In my opinion you don't need many outfits for a newborn given how little they go out and how quickly they will outgrow them. Best of luck!

For newborn stage, I was all about having to mess with her head and neck as little as possible. Plus, newborns seem to hate getting their clothes changed (at least mine did!), so she lived in sleepers with a dress style bottom or onesies (not fancy ones, and without pants) for the first few weeks which made diaper changes really, really easy.

We dressed LO1 in outfits during the day and sleepers at night, but he was born in the middle of summer and it was just too hot for sleepers during the day.

For the first two months he wore sleepers all the time. I wished I had stocked up on some more NB sizes! He was in NB size for 10 weeks (he's always been a little smaller, like 25% percentile). I liked having 2-3 outfits on hand though, for when we went to church or when family came to visit. Although for the first 2-3 months we didn't go too many places.
I would say have at least 5-10 sleepers in NB and 5-10 sleepers in 0-3 mos. Keep the tags on the NB size just in case your baby skips right to 0-3 (which is fairly common). Then if your baby fits NB just have your DH do a quick load of laundry once you're home!
Most of the first week I had DS doing skin to skin with a blanket on him, so he didn't even wear sleepers for the first week haha!

They're also called sleep n plays for a reason! They're totally fine to wear during the day. In the first few weeks of M's life she lived in sleepers all the time. It just made diaper changing so much easier.
Your LO will be here in cooler weather so it will be perfect to hang out in footed sleepers. We actually stopped at target after her first dr appt because we didn't have enough sleepers! -
We use 2-3 times more outfits than sleepers.
I only put Sawyer in a sleeper for bedtime, and I change him into an outfit in the morning. I have since he was born (yep, even in the hospital!).

I never dressed my lo in sleepers during the day. When she was a newborn it was summer so she was in a onesie or a tshirt.

Baby Legs! I hated newborn pants and I felt like leaving her in a sleeper for the day was lazy...
I'm securely in the "one and done" camp, and I've got a baby girl, so my philosophy is that I'm "gonna do it right and all up the first time". So we do a loooooooot of cute outfits, hairbows, barettes, shoes, socks...

Even though my LO was a summer baby, she is in sleep n' plays all the time. She definitely sleeps in them, and on days we don't go anywhere she wears them around the house. Sometimes she'll wear therm out, but usually I will put her in an outfit. I found I need about 6 or 7 of these.

For the first 3 months she was almost always in footed onesies during the day and I had her in sleep gowns and a swaddle at night.

At the beginning, definitely sleepers 24-7. Now that DD is 5 months old I like dressing her up more in jeans, shirts, and dresses... but still sleepers, onesies, and stretchy leggings are the most practical.

LO's 2 months old and a summer baby. She wore a lot of NB footed sleepers, then it got warm so she lived in side-snap tees. I had her in a couple of cute summer dresses around the house (it was easy to change her in them, but I would have skipped it if it required more effort - no matter how cute). Now that the weather's starting to get cold again, she's back to footed sleepers in size 0-3. She only wears real outfits whenever we're out and even then, it's not all the time.
She's our first and right now, ease and comfort is the most important. I think the amount of outfits you need depends on how often you're out, whereas the amount of sleepers should be based on how often you want to do laundry.

Thanks ladies! It seems like I should buy enough sleepers at least to wear mainly for the first 4-6 weeks, since I'm guessing I"ll be feeling lazy, as some of you have mentioned, and it'll be easier than dealing with outfits.

Also, this is probably a silly question, but do they wear onesies under the sleepers? Like the plain white onesies? And if so, do they wear long sleeved or short sleeved onesies? Or does it depend on the temp?

She wore sleepers for the forst 3 weeks and then after that either an outfit or onsie in the day and a sleeper to bed at night.

@hilsy85: depends on the temperature. You'll be taking her temp daily anyway; my son was always cold and was born cold. He had to be in the incubator for awhile. After a couple weeks we just had to accept that his base temp was always a degree lower than"normal". But that meant we took extra measures to keep him warm, so we did layer onesies with sleepers. However if he was swaddled as well, we'd omit either the sleeper or onesie.
It also depends on how warm you keep your house. Babies need it really warm the first month, like 75+ degrees.
You will have that motherly instinct on whether she is too cold or too warm

Oh, and another thing you might want to consider is those sleep gowns with the elastic at the bottom. They're even easier than footed sleepers (once you're no longer scared of pulling outfits on over your baby's head), since you don't have to mess with snaps. The only problem with the gowns is that they don't really work if you're going to be going anywhere with the carseat.

For the first 6 months, we did more sleepers/one pieces than outfits, but that's mostly because I was lazy and didn't really see the need to dress him to leave the house since he was wearing a bundler or something over his sleepers.

People here seem to be really into putting babies in outfits. Our son wore sleepers a ton when he was a newborn and still wears them to sleep, but I NEVER see babies out and about in them (unless they're still teensy). I never even see babies in just a onesie either... I wonder if it's a regional thing?

I wondered the same thing! She has a good bit of footie sleep n plays for nb and 0-3 months, but I found that Baby Gap has a lot of super simple basics that seem like it would be almost as easy as wearing footie PJs...I really like their "First Favorites" pieces, they're all really cute and basic....
To solve the "going out" headache, we purchased a good bit of BG onesies and the cute little slip on pants in all the basic colors... She has them in like pink and gray and lavender, with interchangeable onesies...And then if it's a little cooler (we live in FL so it doesn't get that cold ever) they had a couple of simple cover-up pieces I plan to just throw over her onsie/pant combos...
I figured if we ventured out, it would still be super easy to put her in a onesie and the little pants over it, and maybe a little jacket! I hope so anyway!
I bought most of her "real outfits" for 3-6 months and up and mainly did these interchangeable basics for 0-3 months.
Not like I have any idea what the hell I'm talking about though:)
We have these pants in solid colors...With mix and match onesies and a few cover ups...

My LO started daycare at 12 weeks (3 months) and there were quite a few mornings she went to daycare in a sleeper (nothing underneath). It was a good way to ensure her toes were kept covered during the day and she didn't have any annoying pant waist band around her belly all day. As she got a bit older we got more into rompers which are fun (basically a sleeper but no feet).

@jholler25: That's a good idea...to do soft sweatpants/soft simple onesies as "outfits" for 0-3. It's a bit more dressed than a sleeper but still easy and comfy for baby. And goodness that last little jacket is adorbs!

Have you all checked out the selection of clothing at babyGap? They have sets, with these super soft jackets. I liked them because they had no hood, so if my son fell asleep, I didn't have to take it off when I transfered him to his crib. I had these in all sizes from 6 months on.

I dressed LO in the sleep gowns at night to make night diaper changes really simple. I always had her in dressed with bloomers during the day (she was a May baby). She is now in zip up sleepers, and we have 4 of them, which is plenty. Now we have 8 daycare outfits I (pants, socks, and a onesie/dress). We also have 3-4 weekend outfits. I take a lot of picutres, and didnt' want LO in the same outfits for every single picture.
I will probably go by the same guidelines when it comes time to buy 3-6m clothes, which is any time now.

@looch: Baby Gap is the bomb! It's so awesome that I actually just said "the bomb!" I love all their sets and mix and match stuff, and the quality and softness is so much better than the stuff I have from Carter's!

We put her in sleepers for sleep time and onesies or outfits for daytime. If it's cold, I put her in a sleeper during the day.
Friends of ours dressed their twins in sleepers for their first year due to ease. I like the ones that go down one leg with the zipper or buttons. Then you don't need to do double the work during diaper changes.
We probably have 10 sleepers that we rotate through. We have tons of outfits but they were either gifted to us or we bought them used.
I just saw the posts on BabyGap and I have to agree. They're great. They're a lot more expensive than Carter's, though.

@hilsy85: depends. I think since your baby will be here in the Fall during the first few weeks you will probably want a short sleeved onesie and a footed sleeper. And the weather will only be cooler so you will probably continue to do so. It doesn't have to be white onesies. I would just put plain onesies underneath her sleepers.
And yup after the first few weeks she lives in onesies and leggings. That's pretty much what she wears for daycare as well.No Gap for this mama...too expensive even when on sale with a coupon for me. The only Gap item she has is gifted.

@looch: Plus my Carter's stuff shrunk a lot! Did you find that? I bought a few NB things from Carter's and after washing them, they look sooooo tiny....I haven't washed everything yet, but I'm scared that everything is just going to shrink! The Baby Gap stuff that I've washed so far seemed fine when it came out, which made me even more on Team Baby Gap! I totally agree with you on the 5 Carters vs 1 BG! Plus BG really does have great sales, and they constantly email me coupons, so I never pay full price for anything.

I'm a lazy mom, or as I like to call it low maintenance mom. I wear basics myself and don't put a lot of effort in to being "fashionable" and I have a boy. He was in sleepers a LOT in the beginning. After 2-3 months we didn't go out in them, but they were so easy because they didn't go over his head. We never put onesies under them, but would have if it was colder. (He was born in March.)
I bought/buy 2-3 really cute outfits that I love for special outings, but other than that I spend as little money possible on the basics. He spends his time getting dirty (early on, drool and poop, now food, milk and literal dirt while playing outside) so I don't spend money on his clothes. I looked for cute things, but for the majority of his clothes, cost mattered more than fashion. He's at daycare or home most of the time, so he doesn't need to be super fashionable.

@hilsy85: Your LO arrives in November? I'd get more short sleeved onesies than long ones to put under sleepers. We only used short sleeved onesies the first year.
@jholler25: as far as shrinking goes, I did notice some Carters stuff shrunk strangely...we had a pair of cotton pants where one leg became shorter than the other! For sleepers, though, I didn't think they shrunk any more than other brands (we used a mix of Carters, MeToo and Janie and JackI(how could I forget that, lol)).

Oh just wanted to mention that my rule of thumb with Baby Gap is that if I see something I want, it WILL go on sale, so no need to buy it before then. Unless it's something really cute - like the stuff with the animal hoodies usually goes FAST in the small sizes, but I feel like they email me a 20%-25% off coupon all the time, so I'll just use that. But for her pants and things, I think we got most of those on sale for like $8 each plus we got extra 30% off sale. I am expecting them to have a big Labor Day sale this weekend!!!

@mrstilly: Okay this is my concern, that poop and/or poop blowouts are going to ruin all of these cute pastel pants and onesies that I have bought from Baby Gap. Every time I see a "Blowout" post, I think of her wardrobe and I get super nervous. She's going to need to wear like 2 diapers or something lol:)

@hilsy85: oh no no, I meant short sleeved for layering. With Fall coming I'm starting to buy more long sleeved onesies for M. So she'll go to daycare with long sleeved onesies, leggings and a cardigan/hoodie. Layers that way if she's warm they can just take a layer off.
And honestly I would hold off on buying anything yourself until baby is here unless you are seriously lacking in one department. M has soooo many cute outfits that were gifted. Btu she hardly wore any of them. But really in the younger months where does she have to go? You don't want to go out because she's so tiny. Maybe just pick LO 2-3 cute outfits for the holiday season if you see them on sale now.And re:shrinking we have a whole bunch of different brands as well and did not find that Carters shrink more than other. I think their sizing is just a bit smaller than other brands. Or it could be because M is really tall.

re: blowouts. There def are A LOT! Just make sure you hand scrub the soiled part of the clothing before you throw it into the hamper. Being careful not to spread the poop - hahha. For particularly bad blowouts I put a little shout before I throw it into the laundry.
