I bought 14 pairs (2 weeks worth) of the Potty Scotty training pants and started using them when DD was about 15 months old. When DS gets old enough to start using training pants, I think I'll buy some new ones. Poop accidents are very difficult to clean up with the training pants that pull straight down, so I think I'll get some that snap at the sides.

We practiced EC with DD and started her on training pants at 15 months; we fully potty trained at 18 months. Basically, we waited until all three of us (DD, DH and me) were going to be home for 2 weeks straight; this happened to be over Christmas while DD's daycare was closed. The first three or four days, we left DD naked on bottom and kept her Baby Bjorn potty in the living room, where we spend the most time. The first day, DD had 3 or 4 accidents. Every time she'd have an accident, one of us would clean it up while the other one would sit DD down on the potty to "try." If she went on the potty, we'd give her huge amounts of priase, singing and dancing and clapping our hands for her.

The second day, DD had 2 accidents, and by the third day she was done! We still kept her in training pants at night until last month. To train her overnight, we basically just stripped her bed of all her sheets/comforter/etc... We cut off liquids at 6 (she's usually asleep by 7:30) and took her to the potty for the last time at 7; we also told her to yell really loud if she needed to go potty. She had two accidents, and since then, she's been dry every night.

With the little ones I have helped potty train we did regular underwear from the start unless we were going out in which case we would do the Imse Vimse trainers which had pul and will catch a whole pee unless it was a huge one which wasn't typically the case while potty training. I typically aim for 14 regular underwear and 3-4 with pul. One child decided she preferred regular underwear under the trainers which turned out to be great because she was more bothered by the regular underwear getting wet and because as long as it was reasonably quick outing we would just reuse the trainers.

As far as letting us know, it seems like that is a funny hurdle for a lot of kids. I always have a few set times that we would try (before and after sleep, before going somewhere, 15 minutes after eating) which was a great place to start. As they really got the idea I would ask at those times if they had to go and they would answer. As they would show signs of needing to go I would just casually throw out there "remember the sign for potty, if you show me we can go straight there and then come back to our game." Sometimes it would work and other times I would wait a few moments and just announce it was time for a potty break. The more we did this the more they were likely to ask or sign. I think part of the issue is they hate interrupting what they are doing so I make a big deal out of making sure they get to come back to it and keeping my word.

We used cloth diapers with our daughter, but when she started to potty train (she still isn't good during sleep time), we were going through so few, we opted to avoid the training pant route and go for disposables. We just used normal diapers, though--didn't figure it was worth the extra $$ for pullups. We started that process at about 20 months
