When I got home from the hospital, I made a point to write down her birth story, so I wouldn't forget anything. I agree with the above: have one age appropriate story and another for when she's older. Your post reminds me I need to get started on my baby book! I think it's a great thing to share with her in the future.

@loki: I agree about the two versions.

I'd probably be pretty vague if you want a 7-year-old to appreciate it... something along the lines of "I started to feel some pain around 8:30, Daddy grabbed all of our things and we checked into the hospital at 9. The doctors and nurses were great, and we were both so excited to meet you! You arrived via c-section at 3, and we fell in love with you right away." You know what I mean? Less medical detail, more emotions.

Then write a very detailed story with the medical details that they can read when they know what contractions are and won't be scared by hearing about you being in pain/danger/bleeding.

@pui: yeah and along the lines of what @raspberries: said, i don't think a kiddo gets it and it just mucks up the story. also, if friends and family could possibly read it, i would rather leave dilation out. i'm fine telling close friends and family stuff like that after the fact, but would find it kinda awkward for them to read that in my kid's book.

I wrote a two page letter to my son about the days leading up to his birth. It doesn't go into much detail at all, but it does map out the events of the day he was born, more or less.

I would put as much information as I remember. Basically the same version I feel comfort posting on here!

@Cole: I love the keepsake idea. That would be great for when they share the news of expecting their first.

I too like @raspberries example. Anything beyond that isn't, to me, all that age appropriate. And you have to consider the broader ramifications of talking in detail to a child, kids talk to one another and before you know it Betty down the road knows you were dilated xx at xx!
Honestly, I personally would find the whole thing uncomfortable - but I am not a birth story fan. Maybe write it downa nd let her come to you if she wants to know as she/he gets older.
FWIW, My mom told me I was born on a friday, how she got to the hospital and that the sun was shining and it was a beautiful autumn day - that was lovely and plenty of info for me!
