DS is going to be transitioned out if his crib this winter when baby 2 arrives. I seem to only like expensive twin sized beds, but have seen a few cheaper options that could work. I still have time to decide/shop around. My thought, and maybe this is too optimistic, is that a good quality bed could potentially last DS until he's at least a teen, if not out of the house. Thoughts? What other considerations did you have when you purchased a twin?

we got this daybed from IKEA - it retails for $299 but we got a practically brand new one off craigslist for $150 so i voted in the $0-200 range - http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/30080316/
love that it has storage on the bottom, and it also pulls out into a full bed so it will be useful for sleepovers in the future, or can be used as a guestbed. i also like that it's walled in on 3 sides so she's less likely to fall off. we have a bedrail for the 4th side.
we already had a spare twin mattress so didn't spend extra on that.

The bed and mattress were going to bed were going to be $1200 at Bassett (on sale). I told my mom what we were going to order and she offered us my old bed (it was from Macy's and I got it when I was 15 so it didn't seem that old).

We got ours from Costco. We bought two mattresses but no box springs. After looking a lot of places. We decided since she probably will be jumping on these we didn't want to spend a ton but also one salesman said the matress at this age doesn't matter so much since there is such little weight on it.
Anyways. Ours was the Sealy Newborn at Costco for $150 but I just saw today they have a $20 off coupon I think.

The frame and headboard/footboard were free (it was mine). We'll just have to buy mattresses. Cant imagine spending more than about $200.

LO's bed will be a hand me down. It's the frame I used as a kid, repainted. We'll just need to buy mattresses, which I figure will run about 200$.

@Mrs. High Heels: I really like the idea of under bed storage. They don't have that particular model available at the ikea here, but there is a similar model. Problem is that even an ikea bed will cost us over €500 once we buy the frame, lattes, mattress and pay for shipping (we don't have a car)...so ikea is actually on the pricier side for me.
We have no one to get hand me downs from here since everyone I know has toddlers/babies. There is no Craigslist (booo!) but a similar site all in German, but again, with no car it makes it hard to buy used items.
I'm still looking (and wasting hours of my life on Pinterest while I'm at it ;-)).

Do you plan to have him in a twin until college? I guess I'd pick at least a full, but probably a queen bed if that was the plan. It might also depend on how tall he's likely to be. We skipped the twin bed altogether, but I'm cheap, so although he's got a full-sized mattress, it's on the floor!

@honeybear: Since we live in a place where apartments are generally smaller, I'm banking on a twin until college. He's likely to be tall since the males on DH's side are all 6'+. We are also going to soon have 2 kids, and they will be sharing a room for the foreseeable future, so will eventually have to do 2 twins.

We have have a box spring, mattress and metal frame. It was on sale for less than $200 at a furniture store. Maybe one day I'll get him a proper frame for it.

What if you got a sofa bed for him? I had a great sofa bed that when opened, converted into a full bed, which we used for guests and it was in my son's bedroom until we moved. I had it pushed up in a corner of the room with bed rails to keep him contained and it worked wonderfully.
eta: I tried to put my son in a twin and it hasn't worked, so we got him a full sized bed, from Costco. other than the process to put it together, we're very happy with it. Mattress is from Sleepys.

@looch: We already have a sofa bed, but it's on the nicer side, so not for messy little guys. It would be a good idea though if we didn't already have one.

@lamariniere: thanks for bringing up the point about him being tall... that made me think about a future twin bed for DS. i probably shouldn't get him a daybed like his sister's that's flanked on all sides because there might be a height issue with that. that sucks that IKEA is so expensive where you're at!
