Our car insurance keeps rising and it's getting out of control.
We have two modest family cars.one is 4 years old the other is 5. One is completely paid off and the other one we are still making payments. We have full coverage on both, but it keeps rising ad rising! I'm thinking about dropping to liability only for the paid off one.
Our bill was 185 this month... What!?! It used to be 155.

That's a lot!! We pay about $135/month for 2 modest cars, one owned, one with payments. And ours goes down not up, I'd call around and see if you can do better!

We insure two cars; my company car is not on our policy. Our most recent rate was about $720 after two previous terms around $650.
Edit: are you taking advantage of all the available discounts? Have you shopped your rate?

$110/month. One is a 2012 and one is a 1993. It'll change since DH just bought a 2013 yesterday, though! We have Esurance. It's cheap; neither of us have ever had an accident but I hear they can be a headache if you cause one.

@sslm: what company do you have? We're with all state currently. They claimed we got a "new driver discount" in the beginning because we just started our own policy when we got married and now that's run out so our charges increased.
That sounds ridiculous to me!!

We only have one car, so ours isn't too bad. We get a discount for having our car and home owner's insurance with the same company. I think it's around $500 ever six months?

We have 3 cars, one is paid off and we have liability only on that one. They are 9, 4, and 2.5 years old. I have an accident that should fall off my insurance record next year and we pay $170/month. Ours has been going down the last few years. Have you thought of changing to a different carrier?
ETA: we are with GEICO and I haven't had any problems with them. Our premiums did go up when I had my accident but we weren't married yet, when we got married it went back down.

@yellowbird: It's probably not relevant because I'm in Canada, but we just switched to TD insurance. I just think it's weird for your premiums to increase, usually the longer you stay somewhere the better the premiums get!!!

@sslm: I'm with TD - They are awesome! Our rates keep dropping every year. We currently pay about $110 a month, but we just bought a new SUV so I expect them to rise a bit.

I've never seen a rate decrease based on age, at least with the company I'm with.
With that we have 2 full coverage vehicles (both older), 2 comprehensive (storage) vehicles, and renters insurance we pay $198/mo.

We pay about $100 a month for 1 car, 2005, paid off, clean records (until just recently). But we're also outside NYC which adds to it. Is it possible that you have more coverage than is necessary?

We pay about 780 a year for both cars I think. My husbands car alone was only about 280 a year for liability only. Then my new 2013 CRV with full coverage added 500/year.

There is so much that goes into what rate you pay for insurance, what you drive, where you live, your driving history and your credit score are the big ones I can think of.
I'm sleeping with my insurance guy so I get a really great rate ... (he's my hubby)

We pay around $750 for 6 months...we just pay it to save the money in the long run. All 3 of our vehicles are paid for, so we just have liability on them.

We pay about 107$ a month for 2 cars, one financed (2009 Jetta), one not (2006 truck). We have full coverage on both. 185 is quite a bit!

Mine is $90/month, DH's is $115. We have different companies because I had an accident 3 years ago but had it forgiven under Progressive, but it would be counted if I switched to his insurance. And we've just been too lazy to see what it would come out to if he switched to mine.

I think I pay around $100.. but dh pays about $135! He has a brand new truck though. Mine is a 2009 car.. Also in Canada

Our monthly premium comes out to about 160 for both cars, one sedan & one small SUV. We do get a multi-car discount but DH is under 25 & has 1 accident on his driving history (will roll off in a few months) so it's a bit higher than it will be in the future. Even knowing we pay a bit more than we would elsewhere we have a FANTASTIC agent and I just can't "leave" him... He takes care of us & is like family!

@3littlebees: there are so many factors that go into rates. You may have the best rate for you. The only way to tell is shop it, not compare to others.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: Totally agree. We live in Los Angeles, so that probably factors into our higher rate. We actually went through an insurance broker, so I'm assuming we got the best rate possible :). It's just interesting to see how much insurance rates vary.

Zip code, car symbol, your limits, sometimes your deductibles, added coverage, age, credit, discounts/bundling all factor into your rate.
Right now the company I work for is offering an optional re-rate and I've seen a lot of our book decrease in premium. You might ask about being re-rated if you've been with the company for a few years.

Our premium is about $480 every 6 months for two cars (Audi All-Road and Toyota 4Runner) through Geico. We are both over 30, no accidents, great credit and have an additional discount because we also have home owners insurance as well. My husband has 1 speeding ticket that will fall off this year, and then our rate will drop pretty nicely!

We pay bi-yearly, probably about $800 - 900 for 2 cars per six months. I hate it when the insurance bill arrives, because it's such a big chunk, ugh!

we pay around 180$ for two cars a month. both old cars... and 88 civic and a 91 civic. british columbia is the most expensive place i've ever lived! crazyyyyypants.
my husband has reached his discount limit (40%) and i'm almost there too (30%) -- so it's not going down any time soon! i shudder to think what happens when we can afford to buy a newer car/minivan/suv!!

We have full coverage on two vehicles (2008 SUV, 2006 sedan) and liability on DHs 1991 for-fun car that sits in our garage...
