I've already started shopping for Chanukah and so far I've bought 4 out of the 8 gifts and only spent $12. I'm pretty proud of myself!
I've gotten her a few books and some blocks, all on sale of course. We'll keep it small this year because LO is still too little to know what gifts are really. Eventually we'll do 7 small gifts and then one big gift for the last night.

This year I will spend zero because LO will be 4 weeks old. And I've already told our close family members that if they insist on giving the baby a Christmas gift they can make a contribution to the 529 fund! Next year when the baby is 1 I'll probably spend somewhere around $50-$100 but on things like clothes that I would have bought for him/her anyway.

@MamaMoose: My LO is 13 months now and will not be needing any clothes, she has a ton still, all gifted to her! I think she might be growing out of her sleep sacks though so I might be making that one of her gifts.

Last year was my son's first birthday and Christmas all in the same month, we spent $175 on his birthday cake and we didn't get him anything for Christmas. After gifts from his grandparents and godparents, he was more than covered.
I tried asking for contributions to his bank account, because we don't need more stuff, but my MIL wouldn't hear of it.
He received:
Bath toy set (MIL birthday),
Fisher Price First Remote control car (MIL Christmas)
Ride on car (Godmother birthday)
Dish, bowl, utensil set (Godmother christmas)
Melissa and Doug tunnel (godfather birthday)
Elephant hooded towel (godfather christmas)
Books (second godfather birthday and christmas)
Cash from my parents
This year, my husband thinks we will spend about $150 max. I really want to get him a play house with a slide for our screened in porch.

I don't think we spent anything last year. Lo was 9 months old.
We'll probably buy Lo something small this year? I'm sure she'll get a ton of gifts from grandparents and family

@artbee: It was a 2 layer cake, nothing I could have done myself. My mother insists it wasn't that good, but it was worth it to me to not have to think about it at all.

lO was just under a year and we spent about a hundred tops. I am going to spend that much or less this year.

LO will only be 2 1/2 months old, so we will probably not spend much on her. Get her a couple books, some clothes if she needs it, and maybe a new toy. So maybe $25-50. Or she might get herself a playard too since we don't have one yet! haha
