Nail salon - usually about $5 no matter the service (I never have a bill of more than $35ish)
Hair stylist - cut is $30, color is about $50 - I never know what to tip! Is $5 too little? $10 too much?
Not sure what the rule of thumb is!

I over tip, but it just depends on what I got done. My good friend is my hair stylist so I like to give her a little extra each time.

twenty percent, unless i'm not happy with the service (like if i had an appointment but still had to wait 20mins or something), if i'm super happy, i round up- like hair is $90, 20% would be $18 but i'd give a $20 if i love what they did

I'll tip 20%+ I worked as a server all through college so I have a hard time tipping less. (Unless the person was knowingly being rude, ignoring needs, etc). Sometimes I'll round up also if the bill is $32.00 20% would be like 6.50 but I'd just give $40 just give them the extra 1.50....
I would get annoyed by customers who would give me cash and ask for their change back and leave me everything but a dollar... why couldn't they leave the extra dollar and save me time from counting all the money back... sorry mini server rant

20% is what I usually tip...fortunately I haven't had a bad experience in a long time do I'm not sure what I would do in terms of tipping in that case.

For $30 pedicure, I usually tip $5.
I think my haircut is usually around $40, and I just pay $50, typically. My stylist is one of my really good friends so I just ahead and give her extra $2. I like her kid. (c:

My go-to amount is 20%.
But here are the cases where I'm not sure:
- Taxis. I've only ever really taken them in countries that don't tip. What am I supposed to tip a cab driver in a big city in the US?
- Non-full-service restaurants, or when I'm picking up takeout. If I order at the counter, or if I'm getting takeout, and there's a line on the receipt for a tip.... should I tip? (sometimes I do, sometimes I don't, but it always flusters me)

Perfect timing, I'm getting my hair cut/colored this evening and never know what to tip. Glad to get some advice.

Generally, at least 20% unless the service is terrible. For my salon services though, I usually tip 30%.

i usually do 20% because its easy to do the math. if i'm unhappy with service, then 15%. if 20% is less than $5, then i do $5.

I'm torn on this..I've gone to the same stylist literally my entire life. Nobody else has ever cut or colored my hair. We've followed her from salon to salon and I've always tipped her pretty generously because she worked on commission and I felt it was the right thing to do. Recently, she opened her own salon and I'm confused. Part of me feels like tipping her isn't necessary any more or at least not as much because she sets her own prices and basically just builds a tip into the price. However, I feel like a cheapskate not tipping, especially since I've always tipped her before.
Does the amount you tip change based on whether or not they set their own prices?

I normally do 20% as a base then add if they were really good.
@eeh: I've heard that it's not necessary to tip if the business owner is the one providing the service. I haven't run into this, though. Or if I have, I didn't know.
