I feel like we have been slacking in the reading department lately because LO gets so antsy when I try and read to her. On a good day we can get in 3-5 short board books but sometimes I'm lucky if I get in one a day. LO is only 9 months old so I know once she gets a bit older she will enjoy it more, hopefully. How much does your LO get read to a day and how old are they? Any tips on getting in more reading time? I feel like when I'm reading to her sometimes and she's just babbling away she isn't even focused on what I'm reading.

My LO always asks for more books at bedtime, but we have to cut him off. So depending on how late it is we read anywhere from 3-7 every night. It also depends on the length of the books. We do the same for nap time.

I try to read her one in the morning (only if we are on schedule, which seems to be rare these days) and 1-4 at night.

I just finished reading "The Read Aloud Handbook" which was so good - it reinvigorated our reading efforts! LO is 6 months; we read a book or two before each nap, before bedtime, and usually sporadically throughout the day when he is awake. That book talked about reading while LOs eat their meals as a captive audience - maybe that would help??

Depends on the day. If we aren't out and just hanging around the house we will read for a half hour at least. I sit in the glider and she brings different books to me when she's finished with one. Usually before bedtime DH and I will sit in her room with her and read too, if we're home. No matter what she reads bath books every night. And we go to library story hour twice a week.
Our library has a reading program where if they read 20 minutes a day they get prizes, I just signed her up for that.

We used to do three books at each nap and at bedtime. Now we're down to one book at bedtime, but it's more interactive and I let my son pick his book. He loves stickers at the moment, so we're looking at a sticker book together.
Don't forget, reading doesn't have to be just about books, it can be labeling objects in your home with post it notes, looking at boxes in the grocery store, etc.

my lo is 9 months also. we read a book at both his naps and then at bedtime. right now he is obsessed with one particular book, "brown bear, brown bear" but he is too antsy to actually let us read it. we only have enough time to say what the animal is on each page before he wants to turn the page.
right now your lo is probably more interested in going going going instead of sitting still for a book. i think if you can just incorporate one or two in at bedtime, for the time being, that should be plenty!

@jmarionsmith: we love brown bear. We have had a copy forever but my son wasn't interested in it. Just recently he picked it up and started "reading" it to me. I nearly fell over, because it's memorization, clearly, but he knew "Brown bear, brown bear, what do you see? I see a red bird looking at me."

@looch: that is too cute!! i think my son loves the simplicity of the pictures. i love when we're playing if he sees the book he will pick it up and give it to me.

At about 9 months, not even once per day. However, at this point in language development, talking to her, exposing her to words and sentences and tones of voice, etc. is more important than reading from a book. (I say, "I'm going to change your diaper," "We're getting in the car," "Are you hungry?" etc., and sometimes we have "conversations" where I either imitate her or we make different noises back and forth.) We still do have crinkle books, board books, and fabric books for her to explore and learn about books, and I do read her short stories from those sometimes, but I don't stress about it. It's not like she developmentally is ready and wanting to sit still and listen to the book anyway! If she wants to stop mid-story and put the book in her mouth, that's what we do. Sometimes I just go through the book and point at colors or animals or whatever. I don't think you have to stress about it right now. The idea (for me) is focusing on language, not books, and just introducing books for fun!

@googly-eyes: I do a lot of the "do you want to take a walk?" "Are you ready for your bath?" "Let's get dressed!" throughout the day, I never thought about it before though so thanks for pointing that out!

we're struggling to do 1x a day!! esp on work at office days. we have 2 hours max when I get home and that includes time for dinner, and bath! he's 6.5 months right now, i'm hoping we'll be able to do more as he gets older... but def need to get on it esp on wknds!

@Bao: I think just 'talking' to your LO a bunch matters way more right now. DD at 11.5 months has suddenly become really ecited about specific books. 'Where is the Green Sheep?' is a particular favourite. She went from barely being interested in the story to belly laughing at specific pages etc.

We read books before naptime and bedtime. For naps, it's 2 books. For bedtime, it's 3 books. We use them to calm him down and switch the tone to bedtime. My LO's 9.5 months old.

Lady M is 6 mo but we've been reading to her since we brought her home. I read at least 2-3 books to her a day and then my husband does the same. We usually read after she eats - her attention is pretty focused then. We read board books and word-pic association, but I tend to read her storybooks a lot.

I try to get at least once a day before bed. My LO loves Moo Baa La La La. If I can we do two other times during the day. Trying to be better about reading. I love to read so I hope she does too.

When my LO was that age, I really started reading to him quite a lot (3-4 books in a row) and he would sit still and pay attention. Now at 2.5 years I probably read to him at least half an hour per day, depending on the day and always two books at night before bed. For the last few months he has been taking books off the shelf and looking at them pretty intently when I am busy doing other things.

he gets at least 2 books read to him at night. and sometimes he'll get read to during the day if he brings us a book.
