Preschool? Pre-K? Hmm, pre-school (3 and under) was at our daycare and we paid $240/week which was a full day program. Pre-K (4) we opted into a private pay public program. We pay $580/month for 8-3:00 instruction. We pay an additional $160/month for afterschool program that goes to 6:00. Since it's in the public school it follows their schedule (2 weeks off at Christmas, Spring Break, etc).

We live in an expensive area - Bay Area - but I don't think our preschool is that bad. $1,000 a month, 5 days a week, open from 8am to 6pm.

Our son will be starting a 2's program at a local church preschool in September. Full days (700am to 530pm) is $750, half days (8am-1230pm) is $530. There's also extended day (until 230pm) and flexible day options (3 or 4 days a week) for less money. You bring your own lunch, they provide AM/PM snack.
We're hoping to get him into a different school for preschool and pre-K, but he has be fully potty trained by 3 in order to go. Their program is 5 days a week, 7am - 6pm, with all meals and snacks provided for $655 a month, although they have 2-3 day or half-day options for less.

@Mrs Panda: That's amazing for the Bay Area. We are in the same area and pay way more than that
