At what age did your child start preschool? I was looking at preschools and it looks like LO needs to be potty trained and the earliest we can start is 2.5. That gives us 6 months to potty train.

She entered preschool at 2.5 and was pee trained when she started.

Chloe started at 22 months and wasn't required to be potty trained

@autumnlove: I'm not extremely hopeful he will be potty trained in 6 months. He likes to tell me AFTER he has gone potty.

DD is starting in the fall, she will be almost 4.5 years old. My nephew just started (after daycare) and he had to turn three first.

@lawbee11: I'd like to start at 2.5 but the potty thing may set us back.

I am 99% sure the program starts at 2.5 at her day care. But the school year starts in Aug and she is 2.5 in Sept, so not sure what they do.

@littlek: Does he have to be fully potty-trained? Like in regular underwear every day? Or maybe they'd work with him?

LO is starting a two morning/week program in September. The kids are supposed to be potty trained, but the teachers emphasized that they really just want them cooperating with potty training. We're starting training on Thursday.

@lawbee11: No accidents. So, big boy underwear 100% of the time.

@littlek: Yep, it starts at 2. I haven't met the other kids, but I think LO may end up being one of the youngest in the class. It's fine with me - I really do think she's ready - but none of the 2 year olds in town that we know are attending any kind of preschool this year.

@Weagle: I was thinking starting him at 2.5 would be good because we will have just had our 2nd child and I think he may want some special attention that school will give him. However, we are just now pulling him out of daycare, so I want him to have a break from school, since daycare has been a negative experience for him. Good luck with the potty training!! I'll be asking you for advice.

olive has been in daycare since she was 15 months old but is starting a preschool this fall when she's just shy of being 3!

LO is in a daycare program already but will move officially to the Pre-K at 3 this fall. She's ready. 2.5 seems early to require potty training. LO really started taking interest at about 28 months in the potty and at almost 3 we still have accidents occassionally. She's still in a state of having to be reminded to use the bathroom occassionally. If she waits for the urge consistently we end up with accidents.

Preschool program at his daycare will start next fall - and he will be 3.5. We have over a year to potty train him - and it is required for preschool but not the 2 or 3 year old room at daycare.

My son will be 3 years 9 months (he's been in day care since age 2).
I thought the rule (law?) is that schools can't use being potty trained as a requirement for enrollment though.

@littlek: Thanks! I'm really hoping that she catches on quickly. I'm trying to keep my expectations low and my stress level about pee stains even lower I had the same thoughts about preschool. It would be a special activity just for her, and it will give me some solo time with the baby. Plus, she's definitely an extrovert (I am not), and she gets so bored and restless at home. Even though we try to plan some activity/play date every day.

@littlek: I think he will do great! Most of the kids in LO's class (2.5+) still wear diapers but daycare wants the 3 year room to be diaper free!

In my area, the vast majority of preschools start at 2 years, 9 months. Most require potty training, but Montessori does not.

@looch: I'm not sure, I have a list of preschools and there is a column that says Potty Trained (Y/N) and the majority say "Y."

@littlek: Are you going to be getting a nanny in the meantime? I took my son out of daycare and was so stressed that he would be bored, but between activities and just have extra attention, he has thrived! I know there is a ton of development between 2 and 3, but I think the extra reading, puzzles, cooking and just conversation has had an amazing impact on him. And between activities and the playground, he has no issue with interacting with peers.

Almost all preschool programs here start at 2.5 and require the child to be potty trained. The school we chose says the child must be independently using the potty which is freaking me out bc my LO is 2.5 and while she's potty trained I help her use the potty - I go with her and help pull off her pants and set her on the potty and wipe, etc. So this summer we are working on her pulling down her pants and getting up on the potty herself. It is kind of stressing me out. She'll almost be 2 years 10 months when she starts school so I'm hoping there is some big developments in the next few months

C will start preschool next fall at 3 and 4 months. That's when our school district starts it, and they do require the kids to be potty trained.
GOLD / squash / 13576 posts
@sandy: I'm worried about that too. B sometimes struggles pulling down his pants and taking off his diaper. Or maybe he is just used to me helping.

Our daycare (bright horizons center) will move them up to preschool after age 2.5; they don't have to be potty trained at all.

@littlek: That's great! My advice would be to schedule an activity out of the house, mid morning everyday except Friday (we are out of town often or we just go to the playground or a museum or meet friends for lunch). At that age we did swimming, art class, story time at the library and gym/trampoline. Even just child watch at the gym is a good enough activity too! Hope you enjoy your time!

LO started the day she turned two years old. It was supposed to be half day the first day but she did well so we kept her there until 2:30 pm. She was potty trained before starting and the school helped assist with any follow up. I would help pull down pants and the teacher worked on increasing independence. Those fine motor skills are tough. She had a little relapse with a few accidents in one week so we were asked to put her in pull ups for a week until she demonstrated a consistency again. I think it was a great privilege to get to go to a short day of preschool early on.

I was wondering this. A friend said her LO is on a list to start preschool next summer. They're 9 mos right now! That seemed really early to me. Thanks for posting!

The schools around me would have taken M for the 2's program this fall even though she won't be 2 until Dec. They said the kids did not need to be potty trained. But I decided to hold off until Fall 2015 or this coming Jan at the earliest.

Ours takes them at 2.5 and doesn't require potty training. But, I am not sending him until he is about 34months old (just shy of 3) because is rather him start the year off instead of enter school mid-year.

Unfortunately, due to cutoffs and her birthday, she will be three weeks shy of 4 when she starts. She will get two years in before kindergarten.

Not worrying about pre-school until 3.5+. We will be starting potty training this fall as he gets closer to 3 since he seems to just be starting to look ready.

I want her be at least three. I'm in no rush, but will try have a curriculum at home.

DS will be about 3.5 when he starts preschool. In our area for any programs I've looked into they start in September and they have to be 3 by December to register.
